The residents of Tulsa never cease to amaze me. Had they announced that some poorly selling act... I could see the upraor. Give it time... I'm positive that they will book a wide vareity of acts.

I'm sure that all the s**tkickers will love it but how about something that appeals to the majority of fans?

<end clip>

Good luck with that.

I mean, is there *any* music act that actually appeals to a majority of fans? Any that's actually touring right now?

The music industry and tastes are so fragmented right now, with jillions of genres and subgenres, I'd be hard-pressed to find any act that has that wide of an appeal.

I don't think anyone has said this is a bad act to bring in.  Merely that as of yet most people are not represented.

Opening act will likely be Garth Brooks - Counrty
Then we have Dion - generally wealthy white women
Chesney - Country
Rascal Flats - Country

You don't see a trend?

Not much that would apply to your typical young professional that I see on there.  In fact, I do not know anyone in town of any age planning on going to any of those shows.  There are probably plenty of people who will (AGAIN OVER AND OVER, these are big time acts), just not that run in the same circle as I do (generally young, mostly white, usually married, educated professionals who grew up with popular music from the 80-90's).

We are in Oklahoma, but we are in an urban setting in Oklahoma.  Not everyone prefers country.

To pull out a stereo type that is largely true, it's seems likely that few of the 140,000 black people in Tulsa will have any interest in the acts thus far announced.  Not too mention the other people who would enjoy hip-hop/rap or other forms of "urban"  (code for black) music.  I have to imagine a feeling will start to grow that "they" are subsidizing "us"  (que Roscoe Turner to turn concerts into a race issue!).  But honestly, there is nothing to appeal to the entire black population for the most part.

So I hope they book a wide variety of acts, but so far we are 0-4.  1 hitting a very selective demographic (sorry, I don't know any Dion fans) and the other 3 hitting Country Music fans.  I'd be wary if it was all rap, all current pop acts, or all 1990's acts.  Anyway, at a least a hint that we can expect variety would be welcome.

I want to join in the anticipation too.

The arena opens in early September.  The "BIG" opener will be announced in July?  This give two whole months between announcement and concert?

I'm no expert, but to me it would seem that any act labeled "BIG" would book well in advance and would list the Tulsa venue on pollstar or any number of concert websites.

Just speculating, but this points to an act not currently on tour or a retired artist (Brooks).  Either way, I fail to see the point of holding the announcement until July.

That is, unless the arena has nobody booked.  With only two months lead time, it gives the arena an out, i.e. - we have/had a "BIG" name, but due to "final touches" on the arena, we could not secure a date, ergo, welcome Kenny Chesney - the BOK opener.

God - let me be wrong.  PLEEESE!!

You're oversimplifying things, cf.

Yes, Garth, Rascal Flatts and Chesney are listed as "country" acts.

But each of these so-called "country" acts have a ton of crossover appeal. Each of them have scored big hits on the pop charts (remember Flatts' monster-hit version of "Life is a Highway"?), and their album sales reflect this.

You'll hear a lot of this at their shows: "I don't like country, but I do like (insert popular "country" act here)."

And, yes, each of them sells tickets by the truckload.

As for rap or hip-hop, take a look at Pollstar's Top 50. Try to find any black acts there. The only one I found was Kanye West. Are there any viable black touring acts out there that you could book in an 18,000-seat arena?

Remember, arena booking is a business. Those folks are going to book well-established, multiplatinum rock and pop acts. Not hipster acts that would be hard-pressed to sell out the Brady.

Why does NIN go to the Ford center instead of our new BOK center?

DAMN YOU CRUEL WORLD!

Celine Dion is Jason Rae's favorite singer.  Who the Hell is Jason Rae you ask?  Why he's the youngest super delegate ever...and his favorite tv show is ALF and his favorite movie is "Love Actually".

To quote "Daily Show" interviewer; "You have your finger on the pulse of America's youth."

Regardless of one's opinion of Rascal Flats, does anyone else think that holding a press conference is a little bit overkill?  Hasn't the BOK ever heard of a press release?
I, for one, am glad that the Cain's only has a handful of artists I'd like to see.   At nearly $30 a ticket, they get enough of my money as it is.  They're just helping me out with my budget is all.

Two acts are a trend? I've heard that Garth hasn't said anything about opening? Where has he ever said he would? I'd really like to know[:)]However I think he would be great to open.
Plenty of people voiced their opinion on the T-World site, but I'm just happy they have announced people that are going to sell tickets.

The place hasn't opened yet and I'm not bothered by 2 Solid country acts and Dion... its a lot better than them saying Teddy Jack Eddy and the Bacon Brothers[}:)]

Considering the recent acts to the Ford Center were or are going to be Bon Jovi, Rush, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, did Van Halen perform in January or was Eddie in Rehab? I don't see any of them coming to Tulsa or announcing dates anytime soon. Who else is out there? I doubt many of the acts I prefer to see will ever be at the BOK center, but that is fine with me... I just want the place to sell out.

JNE, we should go to Buckhead together.  I've seen him several times with Primus and have a few of his albums, but never as a stand alone.  PM me, I need to go.

RWARN:

Country or "cross over,"  who cares.  It is simple:  there are no acts me or anyone I know has a real interest to see yet.  There are no acts that appeal to the majority of blacks in the city.

It's not complicated, that's why I made it simple.

And I enjoy country music.  I'm just not a real fan of it.  Such that I would want to pay $35+ to see a country star in concert (let alone $70+). I imagine those that hold out the "I don't like country but..." taglines are mostly in my boat.

Again, I'm not that disappointed. These are good acts.  Just so far targeted to a narrow audience IMHO.  It's early, but I am already getting the feeling that the long list of acts I posted previously will never play the BOk (rock/pop that was on the charts since I was born.  Really, I'm not that picky.

Acts below booked at various stadiums around the country.  This is with a quick glance... and somewhat repetitive.

Current arena acts on tour I would see:
Dave Matthews
NIN
Moby
Coldplay
Pearl Jam
RHCP
TOOL
Radiohead
Foo Fighters
R.E.M.

"black acts" on tour:
Kanye West
Alicia Keyes
Jay-Z

There are acts out there fitting what I'm talking about.  And this was a short search.

So there was only one thing that I could do
Was ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long.

That is precisely my point.  Different strokes for different folks...
