Babies cry before they go to sleep all the time, and neonatal cries are all pretty desperate sounding things.  Baby cries for a couple minutes while the dog is happily tearing away at the diaper while baby swings back and forth, maybe cries a little louder when its artery gets hit, whimpers as it bleeds out.

Tim-
That is exactly what I heard happened. Grandpa innocently put the baby in the swing before he left for work..dad had left already and mom and grandma were still sleeping. The baby pooped in its diaper and puppy went after it....gross I know but some dogs like that. Then the senerio played out pretty much like what you said. The reason they put the puppy down was to get confirmation of stomach contents.  Sad but true....
Oh and I wanted to clarify one thing I said in another post. When I said I hoped our DA really investigates this...I meant no disrespect to Tim Harris...I voted for him, respect and like him and would vote for him again. (Voice inflection doesn't come across in written words and PLEASE as much as some of you may want to....no bashing Tim Harris in this thread now)

Here in Phoenix and Maricopa County there are several infant and child deaths per year due to drowning, approximately 20 per year for the county. There is a slogan that is broadcast on radio and TV as a reminder, "Two seconds, is too long". It's usally a case of bad judgement which it sounds like happened in this case. People need to pay attention to their children and to whats going on. When my son was very young, I never let him out of my sight, his safety was more important than whatever I was doing at the time.

First off that's a horrible post . . . secondly, I am by FAR not a perfect mother, but a 6 week old should never be left to cry for the amount of time it would have taken for a dog to eat them.  NO WAY.  If I wanted to let my baby fuss it out for a minute or two, I would be standing outside their door . . . not sleeping rooms away.  When our babies slept in swings (which they often did . . . whatever it takes!) either my husband or I slept on the couch next to them.  Sorry, no sympathy for that mom.  And from what I've heard, I'm not sure that her guilt is "punishment" enough, does she even feel guilty?  This is such a sad and sick deal.

The baby didn't have an "artery nicked" it was "mauled" and "eaten alive." All parents need to be near enough to their kids that even if they are asleep, they would hear something like that. Also, parents need to be especially mindful with small pets in the house around kids to avoid all sorts of possible accidents.

When the only response from the family so far has been "We want the other dog back now" I feel fairly certain that remorse is not the #1 thing on their minds.

The Mom was probably stoned off her a__ and couldn't wake up. If this woman is smart she will take whatever pea is offered because a jury will be far less civil than any lawyer.

How long does it take for an artery to bleed out? Do you know? The dog chewed the baby's genitalia off.  OK? Got it? The femoral artery is not hard to puncture. Sorry that upset you.

The mom should be glad she is not 'of color' or she would have been charged with 1st degree manslaughter for being the owner of the dog. No sympathy? Then you should be beating the drum for manslaughter.

The DA is setting an impossibly high standard for child care.  Two hours without a check-in? Every night and during naps that would be moi.  Does it matter it was two hours or fifteen minutes? The baby was dead in minutes so the time between checkups is immaterial.

Here is a paper about a women being charged with negligent homicide in the death of her 10 month old child drowning death and here is one that happend over the weekend kids locked in trunk.

There are roughly 20 drowning deaths per year of children under 4, and approximately 6 deaths per year from kids being left or getting locked in cars and dying from heat exposure. 99% of these are preventable if parents would pay more attention to their children.

Arizona overall stats.

1.   While an infant may fall asleep in a swing, it is not a safe place for an infant to sleep unattended. Any parent should know this.
2.   Any parent with a sleeping infant this age is going to either remain in a location where they can easily hear the baby wake up (much less scream in pain) or have a baby monitor.
3.   This didn't happen in middle of the night with a sleeping infant. This was mid-morning with not just one but two adults in the house.
4.   This baby had to scream in pain for an extended period of time and human infants are very loud when in distress much less in severe danger/pain. Any parent knows what a child left awake alone for just a few minutes at this age sounds like, much less what one under attack sounds like. These extremely loud high pitched sounds are basic instinctual responses to call the mother to get/protect the child. 65 feet is probably too far to be from a sleeping infant of this age so that you can hear the baby wake up before they start screaming. But even at twice that distance you should be able to plainly hear a screaming baby that has woken up and wants attention. I can't imagine what a infant under attack like this sounds like, but it's going to several times louder than one with a wet diaper.

This makes exactly zero sense. Something is very wrong here.
Pitter-patter, let's get at 'er

You dont really think that the other dog was the only thing on their mind, do you?

Maybe they associate that dog with happy memories of their baby.

...and making an effort to keep it from also being destroyed might be an attempt at trying to pull themselves back together after a tragedy.
From that angle, it would make sense.

Without making any calls as to the family being right or wrong, watching the state take away everything else they loved may have seemed like salt in the wound.

So the point of charging the parents is what? Prevention? Punishment? Three babies were smothered to do death in their parents' beds last year. No charges? Huh.  Garsh Olive they should have been charged with manslaughter, because EVERYONE knows not to sleep with babies.  EVERYONE.
