Oklahomans To Decide Quarter Design
AP - 4/11/2007 12:11 PM OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)

Gov. Brad Henry is asking Oklahomans in the next two weeks to select the design for a special commemorative quarter honoring the state. Votes can be cast over the Internet or through the mail. Voting will begin Friday at 5 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. on April 27.

The quarter will be issued by the U.S. Mint early next year. It is part of a special series launched in 1999.

Hundreds of designs were submitted by Oklahomans last year and two committees agreed on 10 finalists. Henry then asked Oklahomans to choose the five finalists that were then submitted to the Treasury Department.

Those designs, finalized by the Mint, include representations of the Pioneer Woman; gushing oil derricks; the scissortail flycatcher, the state bird; and an Indian peace pipe.

``In the year of Oklahoma's centennial celebration, it is only appropriate that the people of our great state have the final say on our special commemorative quarter,'' the governor said.

``Oklahoma is a literal and figurative crossroads of America, a place where we honor past traditions but look to the future with optimism and confidence,'' he said. ``Our state signifies so many wonderful things, it's a tall order to distill that down to a single design for a quarter.

``I believe Oklahomans know best about what image is most fitting for our state, and so I encourage all Oklahomans to vote for their favorite quarter design.''

Again, Oklahomans can vote for their favorite quarter designs via www.ok.gov starting on Friday.

I plan to vote on Friday. This quarter can help our state's image or can make us look like hicks. My fear was that our state quarter was going to be two nickels and a dime duct-taped together (and only twenty cents).
Power is nothing till you use it.

RM, went to the state web site and could not find a link that shows the designs.  Someone had posted them awhile back on here.  Anyone else have a good link they can post?

How about this one:

You could entitle it "Oklahoma: We'll cash your social security check for you at the border"

I already submitted my personal rendition awhile back...

Hey!  That's Wilbur on that coin!

I thought the first vote was the only one. Well, at least we have a better idea of what they look like, as opposed to those scribbles of the original vote. I have to say, though, the cow coin is the best I've seen.

I had my own idea, but proper decorum prevents me from posting it. [:I]

Too bad John Kerry isn't an Oklahoman, he could be on both sides.

I vote for the peace pipe one.  I think the winner should have a prominent Native American theme and this is the only one that seems to come close.  They are all pretty mediocre, in my opinion.

I like the last one.  State outline, Pioneer Woman, Peace Pipe.  I agree the peace pipe needs to be there. Some of the others, try to show too much value or look cluttered - they will look washed out on a coin.
Vote for the two party system!
-one one Friday and one on Saturday.

my design for the teenage pregnant meth head sitting out in front of the governor's mansion didn't make it.

At first I was tempted to decide between the usual "oil well, pioneer woman, state, pipe, etc" variations.  But found that I kept being drawn to the scissortail. I started to realize that one of the others would have been an analytical choice with the usual litany of symbolic facts and I would be trying to figure out which combination was more important to state.  But that scissortail, just felt nice, peaceful, serene, beautiful. Something you could look at and feel proud of, or just enjoy looking at.  Not a conglomeration of symbols representing this or that.

I voted for #2, the Scissortail.  #3 or 5 would have been a second choice.
