Downtown Residential Population

On several occasions, I have seen statements on this board and others to the effect that Tulsa has a much larger population of downtown residents than does OKC.  That got me curious about what the actual population of downtown Tulsa is and how many housing units there are and how does it compare to OKC.  I had been unable to find reliable, verifiable numbers, not being willing to automatically accept whatever Downtown Tulsa Unlimited or the OKC Chamber of Commerce might say on their websites, especially when neither gives you a definition of what they mean when they say "downtown."  Finally, I found a way to put the numbers together for myself on the US Census Bureau website.

Tulsa is going to be relatively easy, because what I consider to be downtown Tulsa is everything inside the IDL.  It so happens that the entire area inside the IDL is a single Census Tract.

OKC, on the other hand is going to take some work.  First, to define exactly what to refer to as downtown, because they don't have a freeway loop all around the downtown.  Second, and even worse, there are several census tracts involved, and I'm afraid even portions of census tracts.

But I'm going to have some time on my hands this weekend, and, as nerdy as it may sound, I actually love looking at census numbers and graphs.  So here is my plan.  I've measured around the IDL using Mapmyrun.com (a very cool site, by the way) and laid out an area of the same size in downtown OKC.  The boundaries I've established for downtown OKC are:

On the west, Western Ave.
On the south, Reno
On the north, 10th St.
On the east, I-235 and Stiles
