Flaming Lips top surprising roster of talent

"There was always a desire on my part for a little more intensity out of life," said Coyne, whose band plays Red Rocks Amphitheatre on July 29. "Eventually I would stumble on rock 'n' roll, the most glamorous and intense of modern art. And so instead of being a painter, I was in a rock band."

Coyne, 45, started out like any other kid growing up in Oklahoma, but he's grown into one of the most fascinating, bizarre and original figures in rock 'n' roll.

The Flaming Lips, formed in a conservative 1983 Oklahoma City, are the poster children for Oklahoma music. Surprisingly, it is among the most prolific landlocked states for producing bands. Consider its roster: the retro-pop of Hanson and Color Me Bad, the pop-punk of All American Rejects, country's Toby Keith, the Southern roots band Cross Canadian Ragweed, the freak-out progressive rock of the Flaming Lips and the synth-pop of the Starlight Mints, who play the Larimer Lounge on Thursday.
