Please be especially alert during your morning commute on Monday. Tulsa Public Schools students go back to class. Adhere to school zone speed limits, lay off the cell phone and look out for little ones walking and biking to school.

Parents, please remind your kids of traffic safety rules. After a summer of fun, crosswalks and looking both ways may not be top of mind.

WoW -It seems like the schools are starting more early each year. It's only the 2nd week of Aug. To show you how old I am back in my day when I was a kid we went back to school after Labor Day. Today I would favor year 'round school[:)]

OkieDiva, thank you for the reminder.  I was not aware of the start date and now I am.

Yeah, we went back after Labor Day and were out before Memorial Day. I was perplexed when I learned of the new-fangled "fall break." In my age, that was Thanksgiving. And teacher conference days? Not way back when. Did you know, too, that elementary school kids get out at 2:45 p.m.? Perhaps if they went to 3:30 p.m., like they did in the good ol' times, the kids could start a little later.

Did I mention too that I used to walk to school... uphill both ways... in the snow? Ugh, looking at a post and seeing your mother staring back at you bites.

Be sure to leave some extra time to get to work. The gazillion parents that think their little Susie or Johnnie are too good to take the school bus will clog the roads. Too bad we don't have a trolley like when I was a kid in suburban Phila, PA.

That would take some leadership in the schools today and there isn't a single district that has any.

Those teacher conference days and professional days seem new to me to.

I think the teachers all get together and have an adult prom at the school. Fancy clothes, booze, live music, limbo games,...the works.

Haha I wish.  When I taught school those were horrible days of listening to the crazy-bat principal drone on for eight hours.  And there was a crappy potluck lunch usually involved...(why does every potluck lunch in Tulsa involve Ro-Tel dip and Suddenly Salad?[xx(]

I would have gladly been in the classroom those days.  Break, indeed![:(!]

The school days are really very short when you figure they are only 6 hours long with a hour off for lunch, then recess and gym class, not much class time to learn the 3 'R's... In Japan the high school students can run circles around our college students. American schools are near the botton in world-wide testing scores. I hear in Japan the kids do 3-4 hours of homework a night. I see no reason why school days can't be 8 hours long it will make it more easy for parents who work 8-hour shifts, plus they can increase the class learning time.
