Stainless steel delaminates?   I've heard of fiber board, dry wall, and fiberglass delaminating.  I've heard to copper sheeting.  Never heard of hallow cubes made up of stainless steel delaminating.  The steel just peels off of itself?  I don't get it.

Each panel is a cube of stainless steel.  The panels are set off the building and hallow, each panel floats on the exterior of the building so that they DON'T tear away, buckle or otherwise get destroyed.  At least that's what they were when I took the tour and that's how it was explain to me (us).

This discussion has been going on ad naseum.  What finish material would you prefer?  Tilt up concrete panels or blown on gunnite to look like stucco, maybe with brick accents?  Not trying to be a jerk, but what would you prefer and what are your concerns based on?

I'm happy we went with something different and have to rely on the engineers that the material is suitable, I don't have any information better than theirs.  To me, this looks good. It looks like it was made from platinum bricks.

When I took the tour in May, it was explained but I couldn't remember.  People would complain if this thing was no cost to us and looked like it does.  It's not for everyone, but there's not a lot of people I've talked to that don't like the design.  That's not to say everyone likes it.  Just not many that I've talked to (and no one that I know) that hates the design.

Oh, of course there are the 'roll of duct tape' crowd, who thinks that all buildings should look like the Page Belcher building and keep us firmly entrenched in 1965.

Sorry to assume.

Driving by on 244, it honestly looks like hudda.  They mis-engineered on the glass spec as well then claimed it was the wrong color.  (A friend supplied the glass) It's not, they just didn't realize the color it would be at the angle it was set at.  I really don't think the idea was such a rumpled appearance.  The metal looks like it sat in a clothes dryer for a week.

When the inevitable streaking starts, it's really going to look like hudda.

I think it looks GREAT it looks like something in a major city. I do love how so many people have bad things to say about the new arena it's kind of sad[:(] people just don't take pride in there city anymore.

Fair point on the crinkled skin.  Some of the photos do show a less than smooth facade.  I wonder why that is?

Still, something different than concrete tilt up.

How would we know that a concrete skin wouldn't look like that given the contrast differences between the two?  Just sayin'....

Yes, a veneer of stone or perhaps a semi-smooth stucco finish could have been a better choice in terms of aesthetics and that is not to get into the cost which was probably doable.

The Stainless skin is not a good choice of material due to its unsightly characteristics including panel "Oil canning." Someone asked my source for my opinion. A degree in architecture, national certification and thirty something years in the profession.

The building is not going to age well and of course is only one opinion.

It is still a really beautiful building in spite of the choice of materials.

Citizen, I wasn't asking for a source on your opinion.  I was curious about the delaminating. I appreciate the variety of opinions, I was just unaware of that potential design flaw in stainless steel panels.   It's entirely possible I'm just ignorant.

Cannon until you told me I was unaware it was a homogeneous stainless steel cube panel. My remark centered around the possibility of an Alucobound panel which is two aluminum skins bounded to an insulative substrate. These types of panels do have a real problem with delamination.

From what you have told me "Oil canning" of the exterior surface of the homogeneous panel would be the greatest concern over time. I just cannot imagine that kind of stainless steel panel being very serviceable not to mention visually sustainable.

I think its the most beautiful arena constructed yet. Ultra-modern and very functional.

The only complaint that i have is the area around it. Destroy or renovate those old federal buildings and put up something more appealing. Wasnt there plans for a new major hotel downtown ?
