Could Tulsa Support the USFSA Nationals?

Could Tulsa support an event such as the US Figure Skating Nationals? I think that the BOK Center would be a spectacular venue for such an event and it would behoove Tulsa to court the US Figure Skating Association to host it in their state of the art arena.

The revenue and recognition generated by the nationals competition would be significant as it is a week-long event that reaches its climax on the final two days and it is nationally televised.

I'm curious to hear Tulsa residents' opinions on if you think the city could successfully carry this out.

Birmingham, Alabama has hosted regional competitions, which are the next step lower than the Nationals. I think that Tulsa could pull this off.

If anyone thinks so, please petition your city leaders (especially those of you on the inside) to look into this.

My family is involved in the USFSA; our daughter is a national/international competitor. And I'm always hearing from the competitors that they'd love to have the Nationals in a slightly warmer climate than where they are held, for the most part.

I think the BOK Center would be an excellent venue for this and am very curious to hear if Tulsans are interested in hosting such an event.

I think Tulsa could support it but would be best to wait until the new ballroom and other upgrades at the convention center are finished for spill over and celebration events that would most likely accompany such an event.
Thank you,

The earliest would be 2011, as this year's event is in Cleveland (cold as hell), and in 2010 in Spokane (cold as hell).

The are held from Jan. 18-23rd every year.

This is one of the crux questions.  Are there enough hotel rooms around DT to support a national event?  I'd say no.

Another thing to think about are the frequency and capacity of daily flights in and out of Tulsa Int'l.  We just may not have the connectivity to major transport hubs.

You both bring up good points, hotel availability and flight capacity.

I think the flight capacity would be okay, as Spokane is not exactly a hub of activity and that placed rocked in last year's Nationals.

Hotel availability.. I'll have to check into the numbers over the last few Nationals and see how much hotel space Tulsa would need.

Thanks for the input. I think, given a few years, Tulsa could really pull this off. It would be a huge boon for the economy and image.

I'll be getting back with ya!

what would be so wrong with having all the teams stay at hotel central, I-44 and the Broken Arrow off Memorial.
It's hard being a Diamond in a rhinestone world.

Nothing at all. But there will also be thousands of fans flocking to the event. I suppose that's what was meant by hotel space.

Nothing, really, but people who fly in either need transportation or need to be within walking distance of their performance venues.  The I-44 corridor doesn't necessarily fit either of those bills.

Yes, it would really be advantageous to have hotels in or somewhat near downtown for those thousands attending the event, it saves on taxi far and the need to rent a car, which is huge for the spectators.

I'm serious about Tulsa attempting to host the USFSA Nationals. Your state of the art arena would be showcased, and with the beauty of that place alone it would really be a no-brainer for Tulsa as people all over the United States (and the world) would see what a fantastic venue it is.

The infrastructure and support (hotels and other amenities are the only thing that need to be addressed IMO).

I think it is something the city of Tulsa should really, really look into hosting within three or four years. Just think, some preparation now and Tulsa would be in the limelight for an entire week.

It could be good or bad depending upon whether Tulsa is prepared.

I think the city of Tulsa could pull it off big time and showcase the city much more than with the PGA Championship.

Not really sure who you should speak with, maybe someone at the Tulsa Convention & Visitors Bureau? Try Whitney Miller with the Tulsa Sports Commision at whitneymiller@tulsachamber.com

Whitney's a cool lady, and she's exactly the person to start with, re: soliciting a citywide event.
