Does Tulsa have one anywhere?  I haven't been here long enough to find one if there is.  I need to buy some Asian food ingredients that are not carried at Albertsons.  Any suggestions?

i guess you haven't been around here long.  Nam Hai at 21st/Garnett.  Or the Korean grocery store at 41st/129th.  East Tulsa is where you will find the majority of asian stores.

I love Nam Hai.  I could spend hours there, although if you are looking for a specific item, sometimes its difficult to find an english speaking person to help you out.  It helps to know what your looking for.

Not to sound bigoted, but what makes you think some of them don't speak English and don't want you to know it?

Never even shopped there-I just have a feeling that that this whole "I don't speak English" bit is often a big scam.

There is a good Thai grocery at 31st & Sheridan in the Mall 31 Center, NE corner, just down a few doors from Thai Siam restaurant.  Food & various Asian sundries.

There are quite a few Asian grocery stores. If you're looking for general Chinese/Viet type ingredients, Nam Hai is good. If you want Korean stuff, there's at least 2 Korean markets here in Tulsa. There's a Japanese store, Indonesian & Pakistani stores, etc. Kim's International foods is not "international" and it's not Asian, despite having a Korean name (it's mainly Mexican products & cooking equipment)...

All you have to do is look in the phone book under Grocery or grocers & you'll get a big list of places, things either sound Asian or have "Asia" or "Oriental" in the name. You can also order things online, depending on what they are. Things like soybean pastes ie: gochujang, miso, -etc can be ordered online- bottled stuff, powders/herbs/etc can be ordered online.. If you buy enough stuff, you can have quite a savings!! You can also get some pretty good deals on nuts, like pine nuts..

I don't know what kind of Asian stuff you need, but be a bit more specific & I'll help you find the right place. :) I cook a lot of Korean food, because I miss Korea (I used to live there).. So I know where to get a lot of Korean supplies.

We also have a Hmong market (Hmong are [mostly] spread across Vietnam & Thailand).. Just depends on what you're needing & what you're looking for.

If all else fails, call an Asian church/temple & ask if they know any place where you can get what you're looking for. Just be sure to call the correct church/temple.

In the Korean markets, they have advertising booths & you can learn Korean from the Korean churches, before services, around 9 AM. :) (Since I'm a Messianic Jew, I don't have to worry about missing church, cause I go to a synagogue on 60th street)..

Hope that helps... I'll make a more detailed list of Asian grocers later, but I have company now & have to tend to them. :D Take care!

PS: No, I'm not Asian, so please don't PM me or something & ask me that.

PPS: The people in Nam Hai speak English. I've never had any problem finding anyone to help me. It's not that big of a store, so you should be able to find what you need relatively quickly, just by looking at what types of items are in the isles. - The lady at the register speaks English, but she is the WRONG person to ask for help. She just wants your money, so don't even bother asking. She'll just yell at someone else to go helo you. There's an old man there, like a janitor- he's nice & speaks English & will help you find what you need. There's also a young, tall guy with glasses that speaks English & will help you. He's usually at the register.

Oh, by "be sure to call the correct church/temple" I mean, don't call a Korean methodist church when you're looking for Thai ingredients. They're not all the same.

That's why it helps to bring along the token Asian dude or Doug Dodd on your next trip to Nam Hai.  If you can talk scuba, you are IN with the owner.

Or simply flash some Ben Franklins.  EVERYBODY understands THAT.[:P]
