Best beach destination from Tulsa

I've been thinking about heading to the beach. I've only been to Florida, so have no experience anywhere else.

Given the fact that I would be driving does anybody have suggestions for a nice trip to the beach leaving from Tulsa?

The beach itself isn't anything great, but I always have a decent time going down to Galveston, TX. A trip to The Strand and Moody Gardens will round out the experience.

Meh, I lived in Houston for three years.  Galveston's beach is ok, but if you're willing to put in a little extra driving, Padre Island can't be beat, pretty much anywhere from Corpus Christi right on down.  Galveston is just a little too busy and seems a little less clean also.  If that's important to you, anyway.

Actually there are some nice sand beaches on the area lakes, especially Eufaula and Keystone.  You can get to the big sandy beach at Washington Irving Cove right off Hwy. 412 after you cross the Keystone Bridge (right at Bears Glen Rd.) in about 30 min. from midtown Tulsa.  The "prettier" lakes like Grand and Tenkiller have rocky beaches but the water quality is better.

The closest Gulf beach is Galveston 8 hours away.  You can get to the Florida panhandle beaches in 15 hours and it's worth the longer drive, trust me.

Destin is absolutely  worth the extra drive and many times you can negotiate a discount on the rentals.

Go just a little farther east from Destin and check out the great little communities along Highway 30-A. Seaside...Seagrove Beach...Grayton Beach...Rosemary Beach are all awesome with plenty of beautiful cottages...condos and houses for rent.

We just got back from a week at Seagrove Beach. All these areas are very pedestrian and kid friendly...if that makes a difference. Gorgeous beaches.

Shop around. We ended up finding a very nice little condo just off the beach (no ocean view) for a lot cheaper than any hotel.

During the Christmas holidays I rented a unit at Rosemary Beach through VRBO and was very happy with the unit and the service.  I will go with them again.

Lake Tenkiller is the cleanest lake around, but one would want to check the water level before heading out.  Of course Skiatook is a lot closer . . .
