Wilson's BBQ Catering, a review

This is a review of their catering, nto the restaurant itself, as I've never been inside.

Recently needed to cater an event and decided on BBQ. Our preferred vendor for this wasn't open on Sunday (when we needed the food) and Wilson's was recommended. We went round a bit and finally talked to the person we needed to talk to. The original quote for meat only to feed out group was about $8 a head. Getting everything setup took a lot of phone calls as the person we had to talk to returns his calls when he's out of the office instead of in it so he can't tell you any real information. We finally got it all setup and we come to the day of the event. We get a call two hours earlier saying they lost the order, delivery address, etc. All gone. They got nothing. They then ask US to tell them what they had quoted. I wasn't the one who placed the final order but I tried to muddle my way through it. We got asked for every single piddly detail of the order, details that were never asked before like "you want sauce?"

It finally shows up, about 10 minutes late, and we find out details like the chicken, for a catered event for 70 people, is just 15 chicken breasts in a pan, bone-in. Seems like he should've mentioned that they server their chicken bone-in and it's not appropriate for catering. They also loaded us down with Bologna (which is cheaper) instead of a little Bologna like originally quoted. Also, the driver said she wasn't allowed to take payments and the manager would come by later to get the check... why? After a call to the manager, who doesn't even know how much we owe him, finally tells us to mail in our payment. (They refused advanced payment)

The food was okay, although the high cost per person was likely due to the fact they thought we were feeding 50 football players and not 50 average adults. I never got a firm figure of how much of what they were selling us. My fault for not staying on top of them I guess.

I'm sorry to hear that your experience wasn't positive. I had them cater for us a couple years back, and everything went smoothly. We didn't get the chicken, but we did sliced brisket, pulled pork, ribs and chopped beef.

That's the perils of trying to make a chain out of BBQ and doing catering.  I always thought Sutphens was pretty average, but you could count on them when it came to catering.

Last two times I ate at Wilson's on 11th, I was not happy, I think the brisket was a day-old re-heat very dry.

Never a problem when I eat at the one on Apache.

When I was in high school we used to occasionally sneak out for lunch and go to the Apache location.  I didn't know they had one on 11th.  The beef was phenomenal--at least at the time.  This was back in the 1990s, so I don't know if it has changed.

Mr. Wilson died a few years back.  Amos Adetula, owner of Amos Mechanical, bought Wilson's with the intention of expanding it.  They opened a location on 11th east of Harvard in the old KFC.  Out of the 8-10 times I ate at that location, twice was for lunch.  I never had a complaint about dinner, lunch always seemed to be yesterday's left overs at that location.  Unfortunately it kind of soured me on it and when I'm in the mood for Que and don't want to wait 6-8 hours to make it myself, I go to Albert G's.  That's consistently great stuff.

Good call. Went to the Jenks location over the weekend. I never had a rib  where all the meat literally fell off the bone. The bone was clean. Good hot links as well.

Also, can't dispute Albert G recommendation.

Props also to Oklahoma Style and Elmers.
Someone get Hoss a pacifier.

This just in...at least in my world.

After discussing BBQ with a friend today I was encouraged to visit a new place. . . so I did - Knotty Pine.

It's west of downtown on 3rd street.

Very good. Super hot, hot BBQ and good pulled pork.

Best potato salad I've ever had too.

You're just discovering Knotty Pine? I've been eating there since....well before I was even born. It was one of the things my Mom craved when she was pregnant.

Knotty Pine is the most underated BBQ joints in Tulsa. It is the Westsides best kept secret. It is almost never mentioned in discussions about great Tulsa BBQ, but let me assure you, it is one of the best around. The beans and slaw are excellent as well as the ribs. A perfect 10.
