So, the 2007 MLS season is winding to a close... and Thursday night 9/27, ESPN2 will show the Kansas City Wizards hosting the Los Angeles Galaxy at Arrowhead Stadium.  A Beatles cover band (Liverpool) will be playing.  David Beckham will not...

A crowd of over 25,000 is expected-- or at least that's going to be the number of folks who bought non-refundable tickets...

A few years before all this Beckham hoopla, Winnercomm and the Tulsa World sponsored an April 2003 MLS exhibition game between the Kansas City Wizards and Dallas Burn at Skelly Stadium that drew just over 14,000 fans...

Quiz Question:  Before tomorrow's game, how many times in 14 home games this season at Arrowhead Stadium have the Kansas City Wizards drawn a crowd of over 14,000 fans???

A)  9

B)  7

C)  4

D)  0

Here's what I'd like to see, a soccer field with u-shaped stands near downtown or west tulsa. Would be combination soccer/outdoor ampitheater and maybe move things like country fever fest and rocklahoma to Tulsa where they belong.

Isn't it something how a town like Pryor can make it work but Tulsa can't?

I'm trying to think of just one entertainment venue that Tulsa has made work in the past 15 years and I can't think of a one, except that Diversity Fest and October Fest. And you could add their attendance together and you wouldn't even get half what Rocklahoma did on in their first year on a Friday night.

To be honest and all of you would have to agree, if Country Fever and Rocklahoma were ever moved to Tulsa, they'd be a failure within the first year of moving here.

Says a lot for Tulsa, doesn't it? [B)]

dfest draws something like 30,000. Mayfest draws even more.

Well, back before Vision2025, LaFortune seemed to favor a soccer stadium/concert venue in the Brady District... and an ampitheatre and soccer stadium are still on the list from Convention, Sports and Leisure's feasability study from 2002-2003... but the new BOk arena could canabalize another venue's ability to attract name acts...

I failed to mention that TU was also a sponsor of the April 2003 MLS exhibition game.  The news I got from a "mole" at MLS Cup back in 2005 in Frisco, TX was that a Tulsa group was  pushing very hard at the time for either an expansion team or to buy an existing team outright (presumably the Wizards) and be ready to play as soon as Spring 2006.  This guy liked Tulsa's first bid/presentation but said the 2005 bid "looked much stronger"...... of course, the bid completely fell through and the proposed downtown soccer stadium turned into a minor league ballpark which looks like it may now morph into a WalMart.....

The Tulsa MLS group had plans to use Skelly Stadium temporarily while a stadium was to be built... So.... TU has known for years exactly what MLS would prefer in a venue because they've had multiple talks with them, and alot of their new plans to downsize the stadium and add luxury suites/modernize with a new press box will actually match what MLS would desire before agreeing to play at Skelly... er, uh... Chapman Stadium.

Still a longshot, but starting 2009, the new Chapman Stadium would satisfy many of MLS's requirements and could potentially be used as a last minute venue-- especially if any MLS team folds---- this league post-Beckham will no longer admit to a team folding, they'd rather just put out a press release saying the team "relocated."

Enter Tulsa...

Rocklahoma drew over 110,000 in it's first year. Next year they are expecting 200,000 and I'm sure they'll be achieving this.

I do think soccer will work here but it's going to take private investors to make it work, without the city or county of Tulsa having their hands in it.

Back in the late 1990s, EdgeFest and Edge Birthday Bash did just as well at the River Festival West and Mohawk.

Maybe the Tulsa parks system isn't up for the damage done by thousands of Okie partiers, and is perfectly happy to let the boonies take them?  Who knows.  All you've shown is that Tulsa is short on pastureland.

were any of you actually at rocklahoma? i was and it was not meth heads and they did not trash the place. There were 2 arrests the entire weekend.

All I have shown, it's people like you that make Tulsa a failure. [^]

Rufnex-

I have a question for you(you may have answered this before so bear with me).  Is there currently an organization or group of individuals in Tulsa that are actively pursuing the acquisition of a MLS franchise in Tulsa?  I believe MLS could work in Tulsa under the right circumstances.  I especially think the crowd at DFest would support a MLS team that was well marketed and well managed.  So what's the plan?
