BA Slated to Receive New Hospital

Commitment from Broken Arrow Medical Facility, LLC to provide healthcare to Broken Arrow; Negotiating with St. John Health System to manage operations

Broken Arrow, Okla. (April 16, 2007) - The City of Broken Arrow announced today that a new hospital will be built to serve Broken Arrow and surrounding communities.

Broken Arrow Medical Facility, LLC, an Oklahoma-based property investment firm, will fund development of the new hospital. The principals, who contracted with St. John Health System to manage St. John Owasso in 2004, are negotiating with St. John to manage hospital operations in Broken Arrow.

"We are thrilled that Broken Arrow Medical Facility, LLC recognizes the need for a full-service hospital in the Broken Arrow community," said Broken Arrow City Manager Jim Twombly. "As our community continues to grow, so also does the need for a state-of-the-art hospital to meet our residents' needs. The addition of this facility will further Broken Arrow's commitment to the very best quality of life for all who live and work here. We are happy to welcome Broken Arrow Medical Facility, LLC and St. John to Broken Arrow."

According to the Broken Arrow Area Chamber of Commerce, Broken Arrow and its surrounding communities comprise one of the fastest growing areas in Oklahoma, where population is expected to increase eight percent by 2011.

"A new state-of-the-art Broken Arrow hospital represents a remarkable opportunity to facilitate the city's continuing growth and bring the medical excellence and compassionate care of St. John Health System to the community," said Michael Garrett, of Broken Arrow Medical Facility, LLC.

The company noted that several locations are being considered for the new hospital.

Construction will likely begin on the project this fall.

I wonder if that means St. John will end up owning the BA hospital like they do the one in Owasso.

That to started as a hospital St. John was supposed to manage, but now they own it.

Groundbreaking February 15
From the Ledger

Groundbreaking for a full-service Broken Arrow hospital is set for mid-February.  St. John Broken Arrow - scheduled to open next year - is planned as an 84-bed general acute care facility just northwest of the Elm Place and Albany Street intersection.  The Feb. 15 landmark ceremony is expected to attract hospital officials and scores of BA business and government leaders, said St. John spokesperson Joy McGill.  The major Tulsa-based health system will manage the complex, which is owned by Broken Arrow Development LLC of Oklahoma City.

BA's five-story hospital will resemble Owasso's four-story St. John-managed campus but will include different features and a refined layout, according to the development company's Mike Prescott.

"Patients will have access to a wide range of services, including obstetrics and gynecology, emergency care, general surgery and an all-digital diagnostic imaging center," he said.

Two physicians buildings are part of the project, which includes retail space to complement budding Stone Wood Hills to the east. The doctors buildings and retail structures are expected to open with the hospital, said Prescott.

"For its size, BA doesn't have all that much retail. We see our own ideas as complementary to what the city is already developing in the retail sector," he said.

Several hotels are in negotiations for two available sites within the development, McGill noted.

Leasing of the commercial tracts surrounding the medical complex is through Walman Commercial Real Estate Services LLC.

"We look forward to the upcoming groundbreaking and construction phase of this project and the opportunity to bring a new, modern hospital and commercial district to BA, its residents and neighbors," Prescott said.

So this hospital will look much like the new one in Owasso.  One benefit from getting this hospital after Owasso did is the look and design layout will be adjusted based on what has not worked well at the new Owasso site.  That whole area will have several hotels here soon.  The Holiday Inn Express is done and the TownePlace Suites by Marriott is under-construction.  The Hotel and Conference Center should be started this year or next with plans for another hotel near the conference center.  Now, there are plans for these 2.

This will really help anchor that area. BA needs one area that can be a place with an identity and some density. Too bad they couldn't have placed the NSU BA campus by all of this or downtown.

I think St Francis begged for this to happen. I just don't see St Francis BA South Tulsa having that much impact on BA once this gets built.

This will help for more identity in this area of BA.

I talked with someone in the city not too long ago about making this area have more of an identity and making it a destination point.  We also talked about NSU-BA.  They are hoping to have a developer build some apartment-like dorms across the street from NSU-BA and make the whole campus a 4-year program, much like UCO is to Edmond.

Here is the initial site plan for St. John Broken Arrow and the surrounding area.  They are still "tweaking" this plan so things could still change, but the general idea is here.

Groundbreaking is postponed until March due to the threat of bad weather today.
