Has anyone read Ask a Mexican in Urban Tulsa. I have read this guy's columns before and he is also a frequent contributor on NPR. It's a funny look at Mexican and American cultures. A good read.

Double A

Sophmoric, tinged with racism, a notch above bathroom humor(hee, hee, pull my finger). I feel stupider for having read it. NPR loses a lot of credibility with me for supporting this hack.

Last weeks episode included, I have found the Mex'can to be several notches above bathroom humor.

It's a crack in a cultural wall that the two sides can peek through without fear of seeing a sharp stick on the otherside.

Pitter-patter, let's get at 'er

you clods around here are way to eager to hit the race button.  if it were left up to some of you no one could say black, asian, mexican, etc without being labeled racist.  sounds like some people have some race issues of their own.

Situations pop up and I find myself looking at a possible racist issue inside myself, like being the only white guy in a packed black bar in Georgia last Spring - I was uncomfortable: but after asking a guy next to me if that was how he felt in a packed white crowd, which lead to a bunch of people chiming in on the conversation, and even more beers being bought for eachother, we blasted past the race crap and had a helva fun time.

So yeah, at times I wonder if I have race cards up my sleeve...but if your calling me a clod, then watch out, Buster!

JDB-

The story you related about the bar in Georgia brought back an angst-filled moment for me.

I was having lunch in the Landry's in Memphis some time back with a fellow who worked for me.  All the sudden about every person in the place emptied their seat and crowded around TV's at the bar.  Bill and I wormed our way in to see what was going on.  I looked around and realized we were a very small minority of white people in a crowd of 50 or so people.  What was the big event on TV?  The reading of the O.J. Simpson verdict.

After hearing the place break out into a large cheer, Bill and I went back to our table and finished up.  Once we were in the car, I looked at him and said "Okay, I feel awful for saying this, but at that moment, I was damn glad they acquitted him."  He looked back and said: "Yeah no sh!t, I was thinking the same thing!"

Right, you've got me all figured out. Now go back to raving about this columnist who is perpetuating racist stereotypes and racial supremacy. Bloody hypocrites.

I've read his stuff before.  Liked it before.  Racial suprempacy?!?  Wha?  Maybe it's just the kinda humor that insists what's good for the goose is also good for the gringo...
Nothing earth shattering...

Not surprised you accuse him of "perpetuating racist stereotypes."  Awwwww. Thumbody call the waaaaaahhhhmbulance.... that's sooooo sweet, AA and Inteller will now play victims of REVERSE racism... bet I could guess EVERYTHING you guys said about Nolan Richardson in accusing him of being a "black racist" a few years back... now how 'bout you guys play a fun game of Indian poker with the race cards Inteller likes to carry around with him...?

Pot to kettle.  Come in, kettle.

Yawn.

This is Kettle, go ahead Pot, over.

"Pot here... suspected homeless man walking streets at 3rd and Elgin... please deliver payload of urban-activist newspapers so homeless man can sell them and simultaneously learn the value of a dollar... roger that?... so, Kettle, what's your twenty?  Oh, wait... dang, Kettle?... was that you?!?"  [;)]
