Jean Pierre Chouteau national trail

Little known to Tulsans the Jean Pierre Chouteau trail starts at the Port of Catoosa and ends in Ft.Gibson Ok. I only knew about the place because I grew up in the area.The trailhead is a steel gate that looks as if nobody wants you back there. but nonetheless this is part of the national trails system.I think that places like this should be OPENED not closed.Rocky Point near Inola should be opened also.

Next thing you know they'll close down Chandler Park. Of course, I was being sarcastic. Posts like yours should be noted by leadership in the community because you're exactly right. Tulsa should exploit (in a good way) the natural beauty of the area and  market those assets, seriously. All we have here in the DFW area are miles and miles of flatness. Although I have lived here almost 20 years, I was born and raised in SE Oklahoma, near Mcalester. I seriously miss the natural beauty of that area and the Tulsa area certianly has an abundance of the same.

that is a corp or engineers managed trail... call them and find out what gives...

Staff at the Fort Gibson Historic Site describe the trail as "full of trash, furniture, and discarded appliances."

This is a national trail. It should'nt be downgraded to a dump site and place to drink 3.2 beer. There are were many places to get to the trail, Port 33 on 412, Rocky Point which was closed. These places are trash dumps too.

Great website! I am glad that some shares the same ideas about the trail. If you have'nt found the trailhead by Catoosa, it is under the Interstate 44 bridge, down a backroad near Verdigris

Glad to see someone is concerned about the trail! My main argument is the fact that all of the signs leading to the trail were removed from route 66, etc. in the mid 90's, it is as if the local government were trying to make it unknown that a National Trail was in our midst. I smell Boss Hogg.

I agree that this could be a great asset to the area.  My understanding of it is that the trail was built with the Navigation System, is all on Corps-owned property, and was originally maintained by the Corps but their maintenance budget has been continually shrinking over the years and areas like this no longer receive any attention.  

I see at least two solutions.  The first is to get our U.S. Senators and Reps to fund the maintenance.  You can draw your own conclusions on the likelihood of that.

The second is for a private group or groups to  maintain the trail.  I know the Corps does allow volunteer groups to do things like trail maintenance.  This seems like the perfect project for scout troops in Eastern OK.
