New Highway Signs

"For the first time in more than 40 years the state Department of Transportation will be making a change in highway signs across the state."

"State Highway Director Gary Ridley announced Monday during a commission hearing the new signs will show the number of each state highway inside an outline of a map of Oklahoma. Ridley says as many signs as possible will be replaced leading up to Oklahoma's centennial celebration in 2007.
Many of the state's 20,000 signs will be replaced at a cost of $20 a sign."

Since we're replacing highway signs, I wonder if Oklahoma will follow Texas' lead by using the higher-visibility prismatic signage that uses vehicle headlights for night illumination?
Think of the benefits to those aging baby-boomer eyes...

"We save tens of thousands of dollars in the year and millions in time by not having to illuminate signs. Eventually you'll see very few signs illuminated in the Austin area especially," Hurt said.
