OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Members of the Oklahoma City Council want a study of the feasibility of adopting Tulsa's funding mechanism for ambulance services.

The state's second-largest city recently added a monthly $3.64 fee on residents' utility bills to help subsidize the Emergency Medical Services Authority. The fee will be included on water bills beginning in August.

Oklahoma City Council members voted today to pay about $3.6 million to keep EMSA running.

Customers in Tulsa were allowed to opt out of the program, and nearly 6,000 people chose to do so.

The remaining 115,000 customers who decided to pay the fee won't pay out-of-pocket expenses for ambulance services.

Oklahoma City Councilman Gary Marrs recommended city staff do the feasibility study

It's too bad we didn't patent the idea. Then we could have made some money on it.
