Title: The Max Retropub - Coming to 114.5 S Elgin
Post by: Admin on January 21, 2010, 07:06:01 AM
A "retropub" that will be decorated with memorabilia from the 80's and 90's (aka the childhood years of most of the YP's downtown) and will feature arcade games from the same era as well as skee-ball. Since this is a bar, it will be a 21+ establishment, and not a "family" establishment like other arcades.

Can skee-ball become a drinking game?

I thought they were considering making skeeball tickets exchangeable for beer... so yes.

Blake, I might still have some '80's albums that would look smashing on the walls in there if you are interested.  They are available to you gratis.  I'm just trying to remember if I gave them away before or during the process of moving last summer.  I'll look around and see if I can find them.

I've got a whole stack of 70s 80s and 90s albums (probably close to 100) that I might cull through and give as well.  Never thought of that.

For some reason I keep thinking "Max Headroom" when I read Max Retropub, which is why I ask...Any of this inspiration come from the 80s cafe that was in the second "back to the future" movie?

Suggestion: Every once in awhile, turn down the music and hush the noise and have a classic clip (30-60 seconds) of a movie from the 80s play on all the TVs at once (turning the volume up loud on the TVs).  There was a bar in my college town that did that (not focused on 80s movies, just great movies in general) and it was always a lot of fun.  Keeps ADD adults focused.

When I hear the name "The Max", I think of the place Zack, Kelly, Slater, and Screech used to hang out at on "Saved by the Bell".

Malone's, a bar in Norman a few years back did this.  I always enjoyed it.  Make sure to blast a song that coincides with the movie clip right as it fades out.

I will certainly be checking this place out when it opens. Good work, Blake.

When is the target date for the opening?

I'm going to bring my thirst for the best beer they have on tap, and my brother, who thinks he is the 17th best player in the world at Donkey Kong.

I can answer a few of these

They hope to be open by mid-may (blue dome, mayfest, etc). Construction is simple, but acquiring the games and getting them ready could take some time.

There is a plan involving TV shows of the same era. Should be pretty cool.

Malone's, a bar in Norman a few years back did this.

I went to college in Flagstaff and the place I was referring to is called Maloney's...so I am guessing maybe it is the same place and your spelling was just off a little, or maybe one is a cheap knockoff of the other?  I know after the one in Flagstaff took off they opened one up in Tempe as well, so it would not suprise me if they had targeted other college towns around the country...

The one in Flag is still there, and still a cool place to go (went back for homecoming last year!).

When I lived in Austin they had a deal at the Alamo Draft House called "Videoke" that I never went to, but it is a cool concept that could be applied here...you run similar classic scenes (30-60 seconds each) and you turn the sound down and let people "act" out the scene with their voice...I saw trailer clips of it and it looked like a lot of fun...

I stayed across the street in the Historic Weatherford Hotel.  It was pretty awesome, but if you don't plan on staying up late with the party crowd I would recommend staying somewhere a little further away...

I poked my head through the window a few days ago. Looks like it's gonna be pretty sweet. I'm looking forward to some Tecmo Bowl, and skee ball.

Those analog TVs with the snowy pictures really add to the whole atmosphere.

I think when it is done they are going to have various shows on them.  That said, they are still looking for some old style analog tv's from the 80's (think wood grain with dials).  If anybody has some around 22" or below.

I went by about 8:30 tonight. The place was pretty crowded and it was a nice mix of older hippies and young hipsters. I think it was smoke-free which I love.

I got a Crown and diet Coke that was served in a big iced tea glass for $6 and sat at the bar. The place is not fancy with a concrete floor and plain wood bar. The bar had a row of TVs from the 70s all turned to different period TV shows. I sat down at the end and saw that they had Guiness on tap as well as Stella. They had others, but I didn't pay much attention.

I like the feel. Many people were playing oldtime video games...the owner was everywhere...smoozing with the customers and occasionally beating a bunch of guys at Skeeball. I played Space Invaders.

This is my new favorite downtown bar.

Thats a pretty good review.

I played Space Invaders but I am used to the "shooting" not the rocket you have to navigate.

I went saturday night.  I loved it.  Played some Tron, and attempted to play Mortal Kombat (guess I could only play it in the 90's), and had a beer.  I just didn't like the standing room only crowd.  Once it calms down some, I'm sure to return.

The max is too jammed full of awesome at this time for a Foosball table.  There is the ability to expand in the back once it gets going.  There are quite a few seats in the place but on a busy Saturday night it is tough to find a place.  There were some open bar stools here and there on Friday people weren't sitting it but some of it was due to having 1 space in the middle of a few people.  Also on Friday at the busiest I noticed there was actually a few open tables with nobody seated at them.

I snookered many people out of their money in the day.  I was an OK state champion in my class (rookie/amateur) in 1986.  Not sure how well the elbows will hold up, but quit when people started using that stupid 'rollover' shot.  I still contend it's illegal.

Is there an old school basketball game?  The kind with a rim and everything and a bunch of small cheap balls.  I used to frequent a place in Dallas known as the Timeout Tavern which had one of these.  It was tons of fun.

Didn't play there much (a tad before my time; I got good rather quickly) but did know a guy who was a regular there; Mike Spencer.  He has since passed, but he taught me quite a bit about the game.

My haunts from that period up until the early nineties were Jungle Safari (Admiral and Memorial) and Shots (11th Garnett; it's now the back part of the Drug Warehouse).  Also played a little after moving back at Billiard Palace on 21st & Memorial from '94 to about '97, when I got bursitis in my elbow something terrible.

Met my ex-wife at the Jungle; she wound up as a barmaid for Shots just as we started dating.

A lot more lucrative now than it was back in my day.  My take for winning state championship in my class/division was $500.  The state tourney was at a place in Moore on I-35.  Can't remember the name to save my life now.  I know a lot of them were being held a Magoo's for a while but not sure now.

Hey guys.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. You've helped make our opening at The Max Retropub a very memorable one. We've had great crowds since we've opened and have had great feedback. I just got home from being there tonight and we had a nice crowd there eating free popcorn, playing games, and watching The Goonies on Monday Night Movie Night.

I'll try to answer as many questions as I can remember.

1. Foosball - We don't have any there right now, but we've got plans to expand the space, so start lobbying now for some foosball in the back.
2. The Max is family friendly....if your whole family is over 21.
3. There is no old school basketball game. As much as I wanted one (trust me...I wanted one), they take up tons of space and we just didn't have much space to spare. Be on the lookout for one of those if/when we expand our space. I own at those games....they're the only arcade style game I'm any good at, in fact.
4. We've got a few more tables and chairs coming this week. Not a ton, but a few. There will be more places to sit in the future.
5. 30K buys more than 2 semesters if you go to the right school.

Some other interesting facts:
- Our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game, Galaga, G.I. Joe, and Killer Instinct should be arriving this week as well as another token machine. We'll rotate the games in and out regularly, so that there's always something new to play.
- We have 6 beers on tap right now, but that selection will be growing to around 10 when our walk-in cooler arrives.
- We always have Coors Banquet on draft for $2
- We always have at least two Marshall beers on Tap
- We always have Guinness on tap
- My favorite beer in the world (Bellhaven Ale) is on tap...Delicious.
- We have more cocktails than any bar in town. I'll bet a hot dog on that. We carry tons of liquor as well as some mixers that are sure to make you smile: Yoo-Hoo, Sobe Orange Cream, Jones Green Apple, Capri-Sun, Jolt Cola, and more. Stay tuned for our printed Cocktail menu (coming soon, promise), with great cocktails named after great things from the past. Think Hawaii Five-O, The Love Boat, The Fantasy Island, Whitesnake, The Jesse Spano, etc.
- Happy Hour specials run from 2-6 and always include some free tokens and great specials on food and beer
- Speaking of food. By Wednesday, we'll have Nachos, Frito Chili Pie, Hot Dogs, Brats, Italian Sausage, Popcorn, and Pretzels. They're all a stepped up version of what you'd find at the movies. Made from scratch ingredients, home-made chili and queso, and brick-oven baked pretzels. Really good junk food.
- Tuesday night is always free play. That's right. Games are always free on Tuesday night.
- Wednesday night is Live Event Trivia like we do at Joe Momma's, only it's retro themed.
- Thursday night is tournament night. Different game every week. $5 to enter. Winner takes all.
- Live music and 80's DJs on the weekends.
- Retro Karaoke a few times a month

OK, I'm lobbying right now for foosball.  And they MUST be Tornado tables.  2 if you can fit them.  I'm coming this weekend, so maybe I'll lobby for them in person.

What's $30K buy now?  About 2 semesters?
I'm talking TCC here, that will buy an entire associates degree and have plenty left over.

Only thing that I would recommend is having a designated order spot at the bar.  It took me forever to get through those sitting at the bar to order a drink.

This weekend sounds like it's going to be awsome, doubt I'll be able to make it though.  I'll be super happy if I do.

Blake, sounds like you've got a major hit on your hands!  Great job!

Red- I've got a daughter in the architecture program at OU, about $4500 per semester for tuition.  Let's not even get into the living expenses of a 20 year-old.  She lives off campus in a house she shares with three friends.  Off the top of my head, rent, utilities, and groceries is about another $3000.

My other daughter is talking about trying out for the cheer squad at TU.  **shuddering facepalm**

Is cheer a scholarship sport/activity (not sure how TU looks at it) at TU?

Minimal scholarships for cheer is my understanding.  Thus far I've managed to remain out of debt paying for college, but next year is an overlap year on the girls.  I want them to have the best educational opportunities but TU doesn't make a whole lot of sense for an early childhood ed degree, more like NSU.

I went to TU and recommend it if you can afford it.  I am still paying for it.  I turned down a scholarship to OSU to pay for TU  :)

No sports at The Max. We do have great old shows from past playing at all times. Shows like Thundercats, Saved By The Bell, The A-Team, Voltron, Perfect Strangers, Knight Rider, and more. We also have movie night on Mondays.

Joe Momma's, which is basically right next door, always has sports on and even has the NFL Sunday ticket this year. Last weekend, several people watched games at Joe Momma's, then snuck over to The Max for drinks and games during halftime and before and after the game. What a day of fun, right there in downtown Tulsa.

I went out there Saturday night after the Smashing Pumpkins concert and it was packed with a fun group of people.  Played some games and had a pint of Marshalls IPA.  The bartenders are very good.  There were more games than I thought there would be and I really like the atmosphere.  Then went next door to Joe Momma's for some late night pizza.  It is nice to see the Blue Dome come to life more and more.  Good job Blake.

Also, if you haven't been in a good while, check out the expanded space.  Only thing I might add as a suggestion to them is if they could possibly add another door towards the back to create a circular "flow" pattern. Makes it a little easier to casually "scan the local merchandise" that way  ;)

Somebody gave the recommendation to get rid of the cargo containers and try to open the whole side room up.  It kind of losing some of the effect of making the music quieter.  However, your door would help.  The problem is there is either a closet or a cargo container messing up the door idea.

Although, I think it would be really cool to have a door in the cargo container at the back end.

We are having a high school reunion gathering at the Max tonight after the ball game. I suspect there will be a bunch of fifty year old drunk chicks included.
