LAWTON -- University of Oklahoma regents took a first step Wednesday toward establishing a Children's Village in Tulsa, a planned 90,000-square-foot facility that will house agencies focusing on children's education, health, well-being and safety.

Regents approved an architectural firm to design the site.

The goal of the Children's Village is to coordinate and expand the delivery of children's health, social learning and educational services.

The village is planned for the site of the former OU College of Medicine clinic at 28th Street and Sheridan Road.

"The university is deeply committed to meeting the needs of the entire Tulsa community and northeast Oklahoma," OU President David Boren said.

The Children's Village will include an expansion of the Child Abuse Network and the OU Justice Center, which support an interdisciplinary team for child-abuse crises.

The expansion will increase the Child Abuse Network's space from 7,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet.

An early childhood learning center will educate children from 6 weeks to 5 years old and will employ 30 professionals.
