Proposed recommendations to protect downtown buildings will continue to be reviewed by the Tulsa Preservation Commission after they were criticized by the development and real estate community Thursday as "extreme" and "biased." The five recommendations were (I'm paraphrasing, here):
1. Do a comprehensive survey/inventory of all buildings downtown so we know what we have.
2. Discourage surface parking and develop more parking garages ahead of demand.
3. Make preservation a vital part of any comprehensive plan and get the preservation committee a seat at the planning table.
4. Increase financial incentives for preservation and increase knowledge/understanding of the value of preservation.
5. Implement a demolition review process that would include a 120 day "cooling off period" to consider alternative uses.
