Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise of the Comanche, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne

This historical account spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanche, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history whose fighting ability actually determined just how and when the American West opened up. The second story entails the epic saga of the pioneer woman, Cynthia Ann Parker, who was kidnapped from her Texas frontier home and her mixed-blood son Quanah.
