I am on the hunt for a good auto mechanic. We used to go to bruton Tire and auto on brookside but they are gone and I am not thrilled with the other place we have used in the past.
We have a 68 chevy long bed truck that needs some work done that just isn't feasible to do in the driveway.

Steve Mason at Auto Outlet Service Center on 11th Street, next door to the old Rose Bowl. Always has a fair price, and is the most honest mechanic I know. Also, he is an old Chevy guy, so he will be right up your alley. Free towing with repairs over a certain price (it changed when the gas shot up a few years ago and I can't remember what it is anymore). Highly recommend him. I do all kinds of repairs in the drive, but when I get in over my head, that is where I go.

We will check him out, thanks! I had used Dee's over on admiral between sheridan and memorial, but the last time we went in they told me I needed my brakes replaced. When I told them I had just had them done the guy scoffed and said whoever did had lied to me.  Too bad they were the ones who had done the job. |

Too bad they were the ones who had done the job. yeah, too many will tell you you need something when you don't. Steve has enough business (a lot of it repeat) that he doesn't need to do that. If he notices something that needs attention but not in serious need he will generally note it on the ticket. If he says he noticed something that needs to be replaced (rarely) then I would listen. I worked for him for a while and was always impressed by how he handled stuff like that. |

We have to replace the carrier bearing, or go with a one piece drive shaft, the whole thing just fell off the bottom of the truck!
There are also some wiring issues. He got the wiring diagram but neither one of us can read the darn thing or make any sense of it.

I just had Patrick's Auto fix one of my trucks. He is out by the airport and very affordable. I have used him for years on all my vehicles.
I have four trucks that all have between 150,000 and 250,000 miles on them. I am constantly needing little things done and he always works fast and does a good job.

I called Ken's just to ask some questions and get a quote and he told me to try drivetrain specialists...they are no long in business from what I can tell. I have the name of a couple of classic car restoration places, but I am guessing they will be expensive!
I also left a message with Steve's.

That's a problem I had in my 1977 Chevy truck that I had when I lived in Texas back in the 1980's, the truck was super, but every two years or so I had to get a new carrier bearing, I dunno why Chevy just didn't use a single piece drive shaft, like some other models did, It was a great truck with a 305 banger silver in color and red on the inside- another drawback on that truck was the turning radius was too wide you'd need alot of room to make a "U"-Turn. When I bought my next truck I made sure it had a single piece driveshaft. My 1990 F-150 has an aluminum drive shaft I'm surprised it held up all these years. |

Just to update, we went with Steve's auto outlet because he gave me the straightest answer and was quick with an estimate. We had it towed in yesterday and it was ready by 10am this morning for a great price.
As long as it is really fixed this time I give them an A+!

If it's not fixed, he guarantees his work, so if something did go wrong in the repairs he will take care of it. He really is a stand up mechanic. |
