Sorry this is a semi duplicate post, but I was amazed to hear the news dude on 1170 refer to the 1921 Race Riot as a 'melee.' I am not inclined to ask what was meant by that or to explore it further.  The announcer was Jack Bush, and he said it 'killed dozens.'

A street fight can be considered a melee, armed groups of white folk shooting down blacks and burning whole swaths of the city is anything but a 'melee.'
