Title: Wow! 20" wide seats in the new arena
Post by: Gaspar on April 25, 2008, 03:00:43 PM
Just found out that the seats in the new BOK arena are only 20" wide.

Not proud of it, but my butt in 18" wide, and I'm only about 20lbs. overweight. [:I]

We're sending the measuring tape around the office, and most of us don't fit. [:(]

I'm not sure that Oklahoma is a good place for 19" seats.  Is this normal for an arena?

Edit (sorry typo not 17"  19")  Just looked it up and some are up to 22" wide.  Still very narrow!

Some in the Reynolds center are 16" wide.  Those are in the corner to allow the bowl to "round" without space between the seats.  I assume the smaller ones in the BOk are likewise.

1 or 2" adds up with 18000 seats (around 1500 extra seats at 20-22" vs. 22-24").

The Civic Center is a torture chamber for large people. I went to one hockey game and never again. The designer that made the decision to use the smaller seats was up to the same only mass seating trick. Use the smallest seats possible and your seat count goes up which impresses the public. We do that all the time in church sanctuary seating because the space will only see a full situation on rare occasions.

Here's the World story about the seats. Click on the photos and flip through them for a graphic comparing the BOK Center's seats to other venues.

I thought the Tulsa World article only said one thing:  Tulsa is fat.  We need larger seats.

The 20" seats are the ones for the corner like mentioned before, the rest are 21" and 22"

If I remember correctly, 23" is the largest size mass manufactured.

Tulsa's apparent fatness explains a lot of its negativity towards the development of walkable urban spaces, such as Downtown!

If you build them, they will come. [:D]

In terms of quality of life things, I believe that both current residents will appreciate walkable features and use them more after they see them, and people looking to move will prefer Tulsa over the subs if they have these assets in place.  Elected officials need to have the vision and resolve enough to seek these solutions even sometimes before they are popular with the local beat.
