As builders eye Turkey Mountain - the last of our Urban Wilderness - for yet another series of strip malls.

They eye turning private property on the base of turkey mountain that was never part of the park for a small office park.

World's not over quite yet.

A) they never give up parkland.
B) there will be more parkland, that is currently not parkland, but being used as such.
C) There are major topographical things that will make development on TM next to impossible.
D) there are utilities and pipeline easements that complicate development significantly.

E) All that being said, I agree that TM is one of the most underrated assets in Tulsa.

Have you ever been to Chandler Park?

Or Mohawk Park (Oxley)?

I love Turkey Mountain.  But this is private land.  Hard to blame the owner of private land for wanting to profit from it at the hands of an evil developer.  I bet if a private group of citizens wanted to buy it from him and hand it over to the parks authority he'd sell it to you just the same.

Where was the previous thread on this, we had all sorts of good links to maps and whatnot.

I did some research into this issue, and I feel that Turkey Mtn is safe.  I talked to INCOG about the zoning changes, etc.  The development will be along the I-75 corridor and will not abut Turkey Mtn.

I was just out hiking at Turkey Mtn recently, and I don't remember even seeing the highway from the trails.  I was much more struck by development when I hiked along the trails where I could look across the river at everything on the east bank.  Makes me appreciate being on the east side of the river and looking west at the green space of Turkey Mtn.

Also, I heard a rumor that the Kaiser folks (TCF?) have been purchasing land adjacent to Turkey Mtn...which, given all the money they've donated to the River Parks, makes me feel warm and fuzzy about Turkey Mtn's future.  I would guess that it will either serve as a buffer zone to the park, or Turkey Mtn will grow in the future.

I have heard the same.  It is a wonderful thing.  About half of the trails being used on Turkey are on private property, and so this legitimizes them, and takes the liability and tresspassing issue off of the table.  We are quite lucky to have such a generous benefactor.

I think something should be done on Turkey Mountain, but it would have to be iconic, something really great.  If it DOES get developed, I don't want to see crappy strip malls or vanilla office parks on it.  Have you seen the view of Tulsa from up there?  It is niiice.

They could put in luxury housing with the only parking being directly adjacent to 61st and you walk to your condo/apartment.

Thanks, Mr. Pickypoint, but I think we all know what he meant. [8)]

I hate to jump on a newbie, but there was no need to be harsh to Mini.

Well, they probably wouldn't be.  If someone had no connections to Tulsa they probably wouldn't care if a random hill was being developed.  If they did have connections here, they'd know.

And if, for some reason, they cared but did not know what highways we are talking about... I bet they could figure it out by looking at a map.  Unless, they cared enough to read this thread but didn't care enough to look at a map of the area.  Or, they were too dense to realize I-75 isn't in this state by US 75 passes by the aforementioned park.

Aw, CF, thanks. But it really doesn't bother me.

He went out of his way to point out an insignificant error...but I didn't have to say anything either. LOL [:I]

I never could understand "Turkey Mountain".. There does not seem to be anything there except a dirt & mud trail. They should clear that area and finish building the RiverSide jogging Trail over there. The west side of the River is screaming to have a jogging trail. They built some trail and near I-44 and quit.[?]

They are almost ready to open that new trail.  The portion of the trail that goes around the sewer plant is paved but baragaded with signs about live electrical wires...that may just be to keep us off of it.
