1)  Can you really call it "resign" when you are told that you are no longer wanted and will be forced to leave.  Maybe you could call that "leaving on good terms" but resign implies that it was his decision.  It certainly was NOT.

2) Technically, Mike Holder will replace him.

Safetyguy, do you know ANYTHING about basketball?  I hear there's a job opening in Stillwater.

This doesn't make sense to me.  It was his second year as head coach.  He lost 2 starters over the summer, and was just starting to put the pieces back together.  Nobody wins national championships their first few years...and few coaches even have winning records this early in their careers.

Meanwhile, over at Boone Pickens Stadium (nee Lewis Field)...a longstanding OSU Football tradition keeps on rollin'...

I know B.E.E.F... Balance, Elbows, Eyes, Follow-through for free throws. I was a basketball manager in high school. That makes me qualified right? I better add that to my resume and send it to Mike Holder right away!!

It is plausible, though doubtful, that Sutton may have grown weary of the pressure and did ask to be let go.  Several times this season, there were stories in the paper or electronic media which made mention of him getting eaten up pretty badly over losses.  Maybe he doesn't like being "the man".  Not everyone is cut out to be a chief.

Travis Ford of UMASS is OSU's next coach.

So...um...they replaced a guy with a 57% win percentage (after 2 years as a head coach) with a guy with a 56% win percentage (after 8 years as a head coach)?

It seems there was no plan other than to buy Bill Self.  Is that why they're called the "Pokes?"

Sean Sutton was let go because the entire program was falling apart on several fronts.  He was not doing a good job leading the program.  A change was necessary and Ford will probably do a fine job.  He was able to turn around two programs with a lot less resources than OSU.  At least he has proven himself as a head coach.  Sean never should have been given the job in the first place.  He should have proved his worth as a head coach somewhere else first.  Nepotism is never good.

I have to reluctantly agree with Jack.

I heard a lot of people saying, "Give Sean a chance." But OSU under his watch seemed to start OK early, then fade as the season progressed.

The Pokes had such a lackluster finish, it was hard to see any improvement. It's one thing to start poorly and finish strong. But any coach will tell you that to go in reverse is bad for job security. And it doesn't do your program any favors with recruiting, either.

It's a tough gig to succeed a coaching legend -- especially if you're the son of said legend. Too many unrealistic expectations. I suspect Sean will resurface and do well at some other program -- anyplace other than OSU.

Look at what Scott has done with his program at ORU and Sean has got to feel like somewhat of a failure.

Scott had the same dad and mentor, played under the same coaches as his brother, and even had a university literally falling apart around him all season.  ORU doesn't have near the booster backing for sports.

Something tells me there was bad blood between the Sutton family and Holder or Pickens.  Otherwise, you'd think they would have at least interviewed Scott for the job.  Might be nothing more than the university was so pissed at Eddie for putting them on the hook for his DUI that they want to wash their hands of the Sutton family.

I agree that the nepotism thing is annoying.
