Title: Unitarian Sermon on Wright
Post by: OkieDiva on March 31, 2008, 01:48:12 PM
Passed the Unitarian church on Peoria on the way in to work this a.m. Am intrigued by the sermon topic (from last week, I assume?): "Why Jeremiah is Right" (Please excuse me if this is not 100% correct, as I was more focused on the potholes...). If sermon was last week, did anyone hear it? Is there a transcript, by chance? I'm fascinated...

I assume it was a cleverly written sign to get your attention on a recent headline while referencing the 7th Century BC Prophet Jeremiah.  He is best known for doing somewhat extreme attention grabbing things (wearing a wooden yoke in public, getting people to break temperance vows etc.)

He was right in that he predicted the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians.

I doubt they were referencing Mr. Wright in actuality, but a clever tag line.

That stretch of Peoria is one of the few areas in Tulsa where the street has been fixed, isn't it?

Gimme a break, Huntzinger... must have been delirious from my closed-head injury (suffered by driving over so many pothole ridden streets elsewhere) when I drove on the SMOOTH streets past The Thinkin' Man's Temple.

Wait, unitarians, don't they have a horn in the middle of their forehead?

Only sermon I know of from there was from Dr. John Wolfe in 1987, entitled Heaven Can Wait. Funny, and yet very relevant, deals with the televangelist scandals of 1987.

"Why Jeremiah is Wright"-All Souls Sunday Sermon 4/6-10 & 11:30 am

Regardless of who you support for president you may want to hear this Sunday's sermon by the Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, the Senior Minister of Tulsa's All Souls Unitarian Church:  "Why Jeremiah is Wright."

As most of you know, Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. is a former pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), a megachurch in Chicago, Illinois with around 10,000 members, that includes long-time members Barack and Michelle Obama. In early 2008, Wright retired after 36 years as the senior pastor of his congregation. Following retirement, Wright's beliefs and manner of preaching were scrutinized by the media when controversial segments from his sermons were publicized in connection with presidential candidate Barack Obama. Obama drew further attention to Wright when he addressed the criticisms in his "A More Perfect Union" speech.

Rev. Lavanhar is expected to talk about the theological and prophetic implications of Rev. Wright's preaching in the context of the experiences of African Americans and the historic black church.  If Marlin lives up to his past excellence, this sermon will be thought-provoking, controversial and inspirational.

All Souls Unitarian Church has a tradition of a free and open pulpit.  This means our ministers and our guest preachers are allowed (and even expected) to freely speak their convictions without conformity to religious, political or social orthodoxy.  While members might often disagree with a particular sermon, our community will vigorously defend the speakers right to say what he or she believes.  It is this tradition that I believe has rightly earned All Souls the reputation as the conscious of Tulsa:  http://www.allsoulschurch.org/

Audio Pod casts are here:  http://allsoulschurch.libsyn.com/

Video is here: http://www.youtube.com/allsoulsunitarian

It usually takes about a week for the sermon to be posted.

I want to personally invite you to attend All Souls this Sunday, April 6, two services, 10 & 11:30 am.

per the sermon video (for those that can't watch it)

- The sound bytes were out of context and mostly to make news

- Wright has preached for 36 year and on the whole he has been profound

- Hebrew Prophets (in the bible) used fiery, excessive rhetoric to get attention of the people.  Jeremiah called his nation vile, corrupt, a prostitute, and cursed the children of Israel.  Anything to get attention to their message

- Israel was indeed corrupt.  A violent, exploitative nation that mistreated immigrants and divided itself - can you imagine that?  (wink)

- Prophets look at what happened to bring wrath upon their nation instead of blaming others

- A prophets job is to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable"

- "Rebuke, don't excuse your sin" - Frederick Douglas

... then I skipped the last 5 minutes in part 2.  Pretty standard stuff.  No excuses for Wright or justification, just an explanation of where he was coming from and that his path is nothing new.

I don't really care to hear anyone give an explanation for some kook preacher who can't control himself while he's behind the pulpit.  Blaming America for creating AIDS in order to kill black people...please.  Proclaiming that we deserved 9/11...

At least when the Jeremiah and other prophets of the Bible confronted people their chastisement contained a measure of truth.

Black liberation theology is a cancer just like Benny Hinn and his "money cometh" prosperity theology.  White guilt is the only reason Wright is getting a pass on his hateful speech.

But what do I know...I'm just a "typical" white person.

Per usual.  Nothing of substance from you.  Glad to see that you support hate speech, as long as it benefits your party or your point of view.

Please.

It's not as if you haven't had some of your own kooky opinions on this forum, iplaw, especially about the war on terror.

You shouldn't throw stones in glass houses.

Could you provide us all with an example?  Or with just more hot air?

Was it Carter that developed the AIDS virus or someone else?

The title of "nutjob conspirator" is already taken on this forum, maybe you and altruismsuffers can jello wrestle for it at the next forum lunch.
