Hello,
I am relocating to the Tulsa area from the East Coast, anything first hand I should know/check out/ and stay away from?
I would stay away from churches that meet in tents, hot dogs from convenience stores, and people who have facial tattoos.
Tulsa is all good to me.

haha, I will keep that in mind. Although hot dogs from WaWa are pretty good, but I suppose there aren't any out there yet.

Ah, Wawa. You from Philly?
PS. the local equivalent is the omnipresent QuikTrip.

That is great advice! Be more specific in what information you want. Are you looking for info about architecture, neighborhoods, schools? Close in areas and midtown feature some great vintage 1920's homes as well as some great 1950's-1960's modern architecture homes. Neighborhoods to the south in the suburbs feature mostly new period revival stuff, not modern. In any event, I am sure you will find housing prices here to your liking. What specific Tulsa information are you fishing for?
Are we allowed to mention certain Tulsa Now Forum members? I can think of a few.
Start to enjoy toll roads, Tulsa has alot of 'em. Buy a "PikePass" and stay a step ahead of the game. Housing is cheap in "T" Towne.

Nope south of Philly. QuikTrip's huh? I will have to try one out

Just the general area. I have never been to the area, so what great places to go durning the summer? Where to live, since we will need a place. I am coming from a very small area where the closest mall (*or good shopping*) is about an hour and half away.
If you want a small, sturdy home in a safe, historic neighborhood, Red Fork is the best buy in town. We're not the most fashionable neighborhood in Tulsa, but from where I sit, we're definitely among the best. (I actually just posted a riff about this on my blog (//%22http://redforkhippie.wordpress.com/2008/03/08/somewhere-thats-green-2/%22) yesterday.)
We have nice malls in town, but my big thing is mom-and-pop shopping (//%22http://indietulsa.wordpress.com%22), of which there is plenty in Tulsa; check out Brookside, Cherry Street, and the Blue Dome district for a good sampling of what's out there. I also spend a lot of time (and money) buying toys for my nephew at Kiddlestix.
Some of my favorite summer activities: jogging along a shady trail (Reed Park is great for this); eating at Tulsa's great mom-and-pop hamburger stands (try the Big Okie at Hank's Hamburgers); taking our 1966 GMC pickup to the Admiral Twin Drive-In to catch a movie; gazing at the fabulous Deco buildings downtown; wandering through the rose garden at the Tulsa Garden Center; buying baskets of petunias at Li'l Sprouts; drooling over chimineas and broomstick skirts at Grumpy's Garden; clearing my sinuses with an order of nitro wings from The Right Wing; or ducking out of the heat with the "I've Always Wanted to See Inside" tour at The Cave on Charles Page Boulevard.
And it's not in Tulsa, but between the surrealism of the walk-through shark tank and the soothing psychedelia of the blacklit jellyfish display, the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks is one of the coolest (and trippiest) places in the area to spend a sultry summer afternoon.
I could keep going, but I'll shut up now and let somebody else have a turn. [;)]

Wow! Based on that alone I can not WAIT to come out there!! Next week can't get here fast enough. I love going to Aquarium's and Zoo's. And taking pictures. So this place sounds like it's going to work out for me!!
[:D]
this sounds like a bad episode of Friends.

Our home in Red Fork, right on Reed Park in fact, will be for sale shortly. PM me if you want info.
princess,
Let us know what you are looking for and we can point you in the right direction. Do you want suburban atmosphere (South Tulsa), small town feel, denser city or "urban" (in-so much as one can get it West of the Mississippi outside a megalopolis)? This always starts a nice debate.
Family, swinging single, just a couple?
Do you need to know things to do (Zoo is pretty good, aquarium is very nice - though neither is on par with many larger attractions but for their size and market they are very nice) - hiking, water sports, museums, shows?
What brings you to town?
/stalking

The local convenience store is indeed Quiktrip (QT), and they are omnipresent. But they also rule. Clean, not overpriced (considering), and staffed with professional and fast people (really, they pay employees an actual living wage... rare for a gas station). I'm in love with Quiktrip AND their hot dogs. They have ~500 stores from Minneapolis to Dallas.
Anyway, ask, and ye shall receive (probably more than you want).
Welcome to TulsaNow!

Get out the tissue. [:(] [:D]
I have spotted the minimobile in far south Tulsa, suspected possible defection.
Busted! And I was trying to be all stealthy!!
actually I saw the furniture flying through the air like on the commercial.
Nothing wrong with wanting to live a better lifestyle.
I saw the minimobile south of me, almost to inteller territory.
I know, y'all are shackin up...

Wow, well I am moving to town with the Boyfriend.
I guess the subs will work. I am right now about 2 hours south of DC. I love the city but like to live outside of it.
Things to know would be nice. I am not picky. Like best place to play puttputt (*which I haven't seen in awhile*) dog parks (*we have two*) Best movie theatre in town? Best mall for shopping?
We are younger, but aren't into clubs, maybe a nice hole in the wall bar?
Whatever. (http://members.cox.net/tulsamini/smilies/chairs.gif)
Anyhooo...it's not that far...still has a W in the address. (http://okmini.com/forum/data/tulsamini/2007981264_thumbup1.gif)
Puttputt = Allstar sports complex, 61 & 169
Dog Park = None yet, but tons of regular parks
Best Movie Theater = Cinemark for the biggest, Circle Cinema for indy, Admiral Twin for Drive-In, Eton Square for quiet.
Best Mall = 71st for high end yuppiness, 41st for more middle of the road.
Hole In the Wall = Cellar Dweller

Wonderful!!!
What about Go Carts? I heard a rumor somewhere that Tulsa had the big place for Go Carts?
I don't think of myself as Yuppiness, so 41st will work out best!

Broken Arrow used to have a putt-putt course. Haven't been down there in a long time, but it was pretty good.

Honestly, living just west of the river, I took my dogs down the river trails. Good trail and great views of downtown, etc...

I prefer AMC Southroads 20 in midtown. They have all sorts of movies, from mainstream to indie. If you are wanting a generic cinema-plex, go to south Tulsa's cinemark.
For obscure and indie movies, the Circle Cinema is also a good bet. Lots of film festivals held there.

Can't help you there. I go to Promenade, because it is closer to me and has everything I need. Woodland is larger, but I hate the area that it is in.

Downtown has plenty of both. Every part of town has bars, but downtown has a mix of styles to cater to nearly every mood. Sometimes we go dancing, sometimes we go just to drink. But regardless of what I want to do, I know that I can go downtown and do it.

Any Jimmy Buffett type places?
uh, wrong part of the country. I think you are looking for Key West.

No no, There is a Cheeseburge in Paradise in OKC. Although trust me I wouldn't mind going to Key West.

71st is not Yuppi really at all. It is nicer than the mall at 41st, but nothing over the top by any means. All your standard crap (Dillard's, Express, Bath and Body, etc. etc). Utica Square has some more pricey items (Saks, Coach, etc.) but 71st is just a mall.
Most of Tulsa would seem like a suburb of DC. Just depends on HOW suburban you want to get. [:P]
Dog parks! Funny you brought it up, for some reason Tulsa doesn't have one! Not ONE! Do you have two dog parks where you live... or two dogs (I have 2 dogs)?
http://www.tulsanow.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9022
At 41st and Yale there are two theaters, an AMC theater and one in the mall. The AMC one is better, but both are stadium seating THX etc. They rarely have competing movies so I end up at one or the other.
I don't putt putt really (The PGA championship was in town last year on a course I've actually played on though!). Not aware of any spectacular go carts, but I've never looked.
oh gawd....you must have read that STUPID MSNBC article that said tulsa has go carts.
And THIS folks, is what happens when national media is allowed to characterize our city.

We have two pups. Both lab mixes that love to run and play with other dogs. So really that's a bummer about the dog parks. And we have one dog park were we live here. nice big fenced in area.
You guys keep telling me all these great things! I can't wait for Monday!!

71st not yuppie? Check out some of the blue-collar stores:
Steve Madden
Oakley
Sephora
Coach
Swarovski Crystal
Brookstone
Sharper Image
Aveda
Fossil
Hollister
Well I hope you enjoy yourself, if you need any suggestions or have questions while in town feel free to post. There is someone on here nearly constantly that will give their opinion.

Thank you guys so much!!
I really can't wait to go exploring. You guys have sonic's out there right? That has to be the biggest thing I wish we had here.
Now I just need to find a job and a place to live and we are golden!!!
My husband lets our dog off-leash in Reed Park. Nobody seems to mind except the squirrels and the occasional goose!
We're lousy with Sonics (they're headquartered in OKC, so why not?) and Sapulpa either just got a dog park or is in the process of getting one -- can't remember which.
You might also like the Tulsa Dog Training Club. They do a lot of classes at all levels. And Pooches is a good doggie daycare that offers everything from grooming to training to basic socialization so the dogs learn to play well with others.

Yeah, seconded. This place is like a Sonic wonderland. It's the place that the people who created Sonic came to to get the idea for Sonic. Seriously. This is Mecca for Sonic and Sonic-style food.

Add Sephora to the list. They are in the process of opening a new store soon in the mall.
It's just a shopping area. It has all kinds of stores. It is certainly NOT inherently yuppie. Any store that makes it to that area has gone into mass-marketing mode and will be found in at least 1/3 of the malls in the United States. Coach, Apple, and Oakley are no longer anything special really (Coach is just now starting to mass market). Fossil is about as yuppie as AberCrombie or The Buckle.
Short list of non-yuppie stores off the top of my head (keeping in mind I don't go that far South very often):
Wal-Mart
JC Penny
McDonalds
Radio Shack
Toy R Us
GAP
Sears
GNC
Eskimo Joe's
AT&T Store
LensCrafters
Wendy's
Dairy Queen
QuickTrip
Foot Locker
Best Buy
Sonic
Staples
Spencer Gifts
High Gravity (beer brewing store. The only reason to go that far South)
Did I mention Wal-Mart?
It doesn't cater to yuppies, it just caters to anyone with a dime to spend.

Those are places I will need to know. Walmart and target.
Once I get out there I will have a better idea on location. Claremore I believe is our first stop. But we are looking towards Broken Arrow.
IMHO you will find Claremore more rural than suburban, Broken Arrow is indeed a classic suburb. Nothing against Claremore, just my opinion.

those stores are mainly eye candy shopping for the mallrats who hang out there. Rarely do I see anyone BUYING in those stores. They aren't yuppy....mainly just selling overpriced junk.
I refer to Hoodlum Hills Mall as the "eBay Display Store" go look, then buy online for less and no tax.
Thanks to everyone that helped.
So far I love Tulsa!! It's nice to be close to a city again and have things to do.
Only downer here are your lack of groceries stores. No Giants, Safeways or Food Lions.
But again....this place rocks
mv_princess, the closest dog park is in Oklahoma City near Lake Hefner. And yes, we enjoy Cheeseburger in Paradise. However, I don't eat burgers. I just go for the drinks.
As far as grocery stores, or the lack of, I blame Homeland for running the local grocery industry into the ground, and allowing Wal-Mart to corner the rest of the market.
Reasor's in Tulsa is okay, Food Lions was in OKC and Tulsa but that was years ago, so was Safeway. Your best bet is SuperTarget. In any case, Tulsa is a great place, and I know you will do great there. Hope you enjoy your visit.
Best movie theaters -
Circle Cinema - Indies, foreign, documentaries and a lot of times with the directors at the first showing to talk about the movies. There is a new coffee shop, Ailse Momo on the corner from there.
Southroads AMC - besides first run Hollywood stuff, they have indies and foreign movies also.
Everything else is your typical mall theaters.
Although there are a couple of second run discount theaters if you don't want to pay full price and can wait to see the movie.

When I first moved here I missed the Publix's that are in Florida. Over time I have made adjustments and like Reasor's, Petty's, and Whole Foods. Sometimes I will go down to Supertarget if I am stocking up on things like cleaning supplies. The two configurations of Wal-mart groceries we have here are just not my place to find things I need nor are they responsive to bringing in special requests like Reasor's and Petty's are. Akins is another natural foods store to find hard to locate organic items.
