Strong cross winds. I'm thinking if the winds really were 155 mph at the ground, this crew will lose their certificates before this is all over with. Normal procedure would be to find an alternate airport and not attempt a landing in that strong a x-wind.
I did see the video on the news this morning.It was unbelievable. I can't that he actually made it in the 2nd time.
I remember seeing a Southwest flight several years ago try and land 2 times at TUL with some nasty crosswinds (not 155 mph by any means). They finally landed on the 3rd try (the pilot said they had to- I am guessing do to fuel shortage)
The FAR's required (at least a few years back) for IFR flight (of which basically all jet passenger travel will fall under) is for an aircraft to carry enough fuel to get it to it's alternate destination, plus a 45 minute reserve.
With that SW flight, they should have had enough fuel to get to OKC, Ponca, or XNA without breaking a sweat. Doubt low fuel was the reason.
Luftansa is damn lucky on this one, that's pretty much a similar circumstance (adverse x-wind) as the AA MD-80 accident in Little Rock back around '98 which didn't have a happy ending.
