Oklahoma State University-Tulsa is asking to add about 15 new degree programs in an effort to become a "comprehensive university" in Tulsa, President Gary Trennepohl said at an OSU-Tulsa trustees meeting Thursday.
The university needs approval from the State Regents for Higher Education, which make policy, program and funding decisions for Oklahoma's public colleges. Other Tulsa-area colleges will give input.
Last year, OSU-Tulsa received approval to offer an elementary education degree, despite protests from Northeastern State University.
OSU-Tulsa is asking to add English, history, sociology, geology, psychology, biological sciences with pre-medicine and pre-veterinary options, math, physics, chemistry, physical education, certain specialities in secondary education, accounting, economics, hotel and restaurant administration and civil engineering, according to Trennepohl and a press release.
OSU-Tulsa offers classes -- but not entire degrees -- in some of those areas, and some areas would be entirely new to the Tulsa campus.
The programs would provide for hundreds of Tulsa Community College students nearing the end of their freshman and sophomore years and looking to complete their bachelor's degrees,
Trennepohl said. OSU's governing board, the A&M regents, approved of the Tulsa campus pursuing the expansion.
Having no idea how the system they're talking about works, I think it's a stellar idea.
Wow, I really hope this happens. Will definitely help keep a lot more young people in Tulsa and will help downtown.

Tulsa currently has two private 4-year colleges:
ORU
TU
Tulsa has 1 two-year college:
TCC
Because of the above and some stupid laws, Tulsa has 4 year university that can only serve 3rd and 4th year students. They are expanding their degree offerings (seen above) and trying to fight "the man" so they can offer all 4 years, not just the last two.

This is one of the things I have questioned since moving to Tulsa. Most University of X at Whatever are full Universities in their own right. Even most extension offices are nearly comprehensive. OSU-Tulsa seemed to be an quasi institution set in to placate Tulsans with only a minor impact.
Add a research institution. More full programs. Keep the medical center for the DO school. Next we throw up some student housing and we have an actually University in Downtown. Especially with more students going into TCC on the scholarship program who MIGHT decide they want to go to a 4 year college after their first year.
I hope they continue to fight the good fight. Gary Trennepohl seems to be a great man for that institution and for Tulsa.

I sure hope this sort of expansion, with added faculty, will translate into more core graduate programs as well.
