As my wife gets ready to go on vacation and I sit here at work... I looked up the average number of vacation days by country.
India 60 days
Italy 42 days
France 37 days
Germany 35 days
Finland 35 days
Brazil 34 days
Denmark 31 days
Austria 31 days
Spain 30 days
Saudi A 30 days
Russia 28 days
UK 28 days
Canada 26 days
Korea 25 days
Japan 25 days
Ukraine 24 days
U.S. 13 days
Then recall that in most countries National Holidays really are National Holidays (meaning I'd get off MLK, Presidents Day, Columbus day, etc.).
This makes me a sad panda. I don't want government mandated vacation, but I do want vacation. TheArtist and I were comparing non-vacation status over the last months and decided we are both hopeless hermits who will never again get to leave Tulsa (that was my conclusion, anyway). And to think, I just had a Friday day off in August.

What are you bi#*hing about then?
I have "vacation days" but that usually just means I work less. The last time when I wasn't doing something for a job or another group was in '03 I think.

In other countries, when someone works really, really hard, they say he's "working like an American." I take pride in it.
Hey, I am right around Ukraine's number of vacation days! Woot!
Funny, here we say 'He works like a Mexican.'
Personally, I would be more proud if it the phrase were, "he's taking personal responsibility in raising his children as if he were an American."
I don't even make Ukraine, but I've got Germany and Finland level in the bank that I'll never have time to take.
As President Bush likes to point out, working three jobs just to make ends meet is "uniquely American." It makes me want to bust out a chorus of God Bless America.
Remember the old saying - Americans live to work, Europeans work to live.
It's sad that Americans work so hard and don't take time off to enjoy their life. We need vacations. They are therapy for the mind.
If you don't take time off and travel, then you should. Life is too short to not take time off to enjoy it.
5 days vacation in a year is just not enough. It's pathetic.
