The traffic signals at 5th and Boulder today seem to have Tourette's. Is this something new? Are there blind people crossing there that might need a whoopwhoop to let them know green means go, and for the love of all that is holy, go fast?
Are these city-instituted sound effects related to the drunken fountain story? And if not, will someone please tie the two together for my amusement?
(I did do a forum search, but oddly enough whoopwhoop didn't bring back any hits.)
I know OSU in Stillwater has those kind of signals.

The traffic light at 35th & Peoria chirps while the walk sign is lit. It's been that way at least since back in the Blue Rose days.

That'd be my guess. I am not aware of any audible signals in Tulsa. Perhaps a short?

Yes, these are audible crosswalk cues for visually-impaired pedestrians. We experimented with a homemade version in the 80's at Northeastern U in Tahlequah, but since then they have become commercially available.
While we're at it, let's add some crosswalk timers, the ones with the big countdown next to the walk/don't walk signal.
The walk signal is completely worthless if you're under the age of 97. A 30 second green light has, what, a four second walk signal?
I walk around downtown a lot and I hate walking up to a stoplight, seeing that it says don't walk and having no idea if I have enough time to cross the street.
I usually end up just waiting for the light to turn and waiting for the two or three cars to go by, then cross against the signal.
The light at 7th and Detroit has had about a 20 second green, 20 second flashing, 1 minute solid and THEN then light changes. That is, until yesterday. Now it is something like 20 second walk, 20 second flashing, immediate light change.
Ok, since we are on the topic let me explain something to everyone.
When the WALK sign/symbol illuminates it means it is OK to enter the intersection. When it starts flashing it means you are OK in the intersection but no one should ENTER the intersection. When it turns firm DON'T WALK if means move your donkey.
Many, many people don't seem to get it. They think they have to run as soon as it starts flashing. Way too often I hear "they never give you enough time." Yes, yes they do. You just don't know how a crosswalk works.

I've seen these in other cities. They're much, much better than the standard walk, don't walk signal. You can actually determine whether you have time to make it across rather than wondering how long the don't walk signal has been on, as they're obviously set up for handicapped or the elderly.
