is your volume all over the place? HD channels are much lower volume than regular channels. It's so frustrating to change channels and get blasted on one channel and barely hear the next!
I'm going to call Cox about it, but wanted to see if it was perhaps a more widespread issue.
that is because some channels heavily compress their sound and others do not.
Settings (twice to get into menu) -> Audio/Vide -> Audio Settings -> Dynamic Range
Set this to Medium or Narrow
It's a network issue. Different networks broadcast at different volumes. Usually commercials ar higher than programs to "get your attention"
Settings like this on your A/V equipment are meant to compensate.
Also, make sure your audio settings are appropriate for your particular equipment.
Same here. I thought it was just my TV! Good to know.
I hate that too. My audio thing was already set to Narrow. I changed it and will see if it works.

Always is.
Thanks Sq! The difference from HD to regular channels is obnoxious. I was rocking out with my wife to American Idol death metal on MTV last night and when we switched to Dirty Jobs some night time Cinemax it was really loud.

You can just turn cinemax down. No-one wants the boom-chica wow-wow music.
I notice 47 is much louder than the rest. I've also had it pointed out to me that commercials are usually fed with louder audio than the program, which would make sense.
No problems with my 24/7 1080i brodcast via DIRECTV.

Do you have any special offers for us to go with that, Mr. walking advertisement? [:D] We have 1080i broadcasts "24/7" too on Cox...

Since we are on the topic, I can't wait to close on our new house so I can switch from cox to Directv. They are much cheaper and don't hassle me over to add a phone line just to get a 2nd HD DVR. My parent's have had DTV for over 10 years and it was gone out maybe 6 or 7 times.

yeah, except when it is raining or the dish is covered in ice.
I think I'm ready to investigate this directTV stuff. I send Cox a pretty hefty bill every month and their DVR software blowz it. Other than that my only real complaint is inconsistent sound. My on demand stuff is often a little quiet - doesn't sound there. I'd like to know how the alternative compares.

I got a pretty good deal IMO. 2 room system with 1 HD DVR and 1 HD receiver. 3 months free cinemax, hbo, showtime. 20 dollars off each month for a year. Instead of paying 99.99 plus tax with cox I will be paying 49.99 plus tax for the first year. Then it goes to 69.99. A pretty good value in my opinion. They come out and install it for free and if you move they move all your equipment and reinstall for free as well. I did have to pay 199 for the HD DVR though. But I dont have to pay a montly "service fee" for it, its included in my package. I do like that cox has some local channels to catch the astros/cardinals, especially when they play my beloved chicago cubs but there are pros and cons to everything.
$70 + HSI + Phone = just about exactly what we pay for Cox anyway IIRC... not worth it.

Ice storm didnt affect my DirecTV (once I got the generator going). Wonder how many Cox subscribers could say the same?

Didn't effect my cox services, even without a generator.
I can't wait for Uverse to come to town. Hopefully they serve downtown.
I can't stand Cox. I picture a dusty old Apple II powering their on-demand services. They're the worst. You press a button, then wait five seconds, then something happens. I had Insight at a previous location and their on-demand programming actually played when you pressed play rather than five seconds later.

I think I got my cable feed back about 2 hrs after the electricity. My neighbor wasn't so lucky. Hell I didn't have my generator wired in till 30 minutes before I got my power back so I didn't really miss cable.
Hey look, Cox is giving us nothing, and it's free!
Tulsa World (//%22http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=20080125_5__CoxCo72666%22)
Rhapsody plans (//%22http://learn.rhapsody.com/plans%22)
Crapsody is like a virus in my book.
If this worked within the cable box I might get slightly interested.
