Title: I Needa Pita
Post by: dayzella on January 20, 2008, 10:28:08 AM
I made hummus, but I have no pita.  I'm not particularly looking forward to making my own.  Any ideas on where to buy pita in Tulsa?

Helen of Troy has flat bread, not pita pockets, and it is very good.

Dayzella,

Can't argue with everyone else's assessment of Shawkat's, but I do believe I've seen it before at Walmart Neighborhood Market and Food Pyramid if you can handle "generic" pita bread. [;)]

I was hoping for the name of the bakery that supplies the restaurants in the area with their pita and crossing my fingers that pita wasn't coming in frozen from Kansas City or the like.

A field trip to Shawkat's is now planned for Tuesday - thanks to all who answered.

Fadler's sells pita's to a lot of the "gyro" places.

Frozen, I believe.

I've mastered making my own tabouli, but still have not attempted hummus.  How hard is it?

Not hard.  It's mostly just mashing/pureeing.

Shawkat's mini-review =
Pita - awesome
Feta - awesome X 4
Baba Ghounnouj - salty, oily, bland, and no roasted/smokey taste to it.

But the feta and pita more than made up for the baba ghounnouj.

I checked out Pita Place.  They need help.....in more ways than one.  The concept is solid, but I think they are charging too much for what you get and they are WAY understaffed.
