Snagged some scale renderings of some Tulsa buildings we are familiar with and put them next to some of the BIG skyscrapers that are under construction. Look at the size of the clock on that one building compared to the Philtower. Yeeeze! that succer is big.

The Abraj al Bait towers are a monstrosity. It looks like something out of the film Metropolis.
Added the tallest buildings in OKC for the OKC folk, and the Mayo Hotel.

Yeah, once the Burj Dubai is finished the terrorists will have something to practice on.
i predict that thing collapsing on its own though. Something about towers and Babel and stuff. Maybe they will all fall to the ground and start speaking English.
Thanks for the images Artist, I've always been fascinated by big buildings. If you add to it again, throw in building we may have visited - Sears Tower and Empire State perhaps.
I don't really understand why Arab states are starting to build tall buildings. Generally, they are of a need for space. But with nothing but empty desert around one would think 3 floor office complexes would be just as good.
Not that I care, I'd prefer the sky scrappers. Just sayin'.
But wait! Where's "The American"?
Dont bring that up, please. [xx(]
The American is supposed to be 217 feet, which would be about 66 meters on this scale. I think it would look good in Dubai.

I think it is because skyscrapers = prominence. And the folks over there with all of that money want to look prominent. My guess. People are naturally attracted to skyscrapers, it's the closest thing to a man made mountain.
If you haven't seen it, they are also building man made islands and a map of the world in Dubai. Here is a shot from Google Earth:

Yes Dubai that is where i'm from and my entire family lives there... I just go to school here...
Why are there so many buildings??? Well long story short, thank the British... It's there next Hong Kong.
Go to Dubai, and there are at least 1 million Eurpoeans living inside the City. I actually hear about Tulsa from American's living in Dubai for choice of university.
Abraj al Bait towers -- That is being built in Mecca, Saudi Arabia it's about 50% done...
I'm fairly confident Dubai has an intelligent autocrat to thank for its success. The British have had little influence in the region since about 1956. An autocrat with a mind for economics, oil wealth, and no aversion to virtual slavery can build amazing things.
I'd be interested to hear what your family thinks, by all accounts it is the most amazing city of 1.5mil in the world (think Kansas City metro, that's all the people there are). But with 5:1 foreign to citizen and the related income disparity I question the system for the long term. BUT, that's just based on what I hear... never been there.
Nonetheless, I hope to hear your differing perspective on things.
The thing is Dubai has always been a Tourist stop for Europeans, AUSTRALIANS, and Asians...
More company's move there from Saudi due to there problems bringing with them people and ton's of money... Just lately Halliburton was added to the list...
Britain-- I don't know how exactly to show it to u but they are the one's to thank the most... But the money comes from locals investors... The world's largest Real Estate company was founded there Emmar... The owner has over $6 billion now....
Energy-- the largest Energy Company is now located in Dubai is run by the Prince of Morocco and this guy named Pete from Washington D.C. I forgot the name but I can find it...
Religion-- Muslim tradition is (was) being carried out in Dubai ex: 12 pm pray time, city life stops, everyone pray's then go on 2hr lunch break then work until 6pm NOT ANYMORE in at least 90% of Dubai...
Construction-- Dubai always was growing but NOW IT'S BOOMING!!!
College-- Harvard University just opened there Medical school wise... Many students have stopped coming to America and now are in Dubai...
