Title: Carbon Footprint Calculator
Post by: dayzella on January 18, 2008, 01:10:37 PM
I used this calculator today to see how our household was compared to the national average in terms of energy use and reduction:

http://www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator/

It was an interesting way to fill 5 internet minutes.  And I will be checking my tire pressure this weekend, for sure.

Yay!  We're only responsible for 41 tons of CO2 annually!  Take that, Global Warming!

38 tons in my household.

I'm certain the number's lower than that, though. The questions don't ask about my 1.5 KW solar system on my roof. That probably lops off two or three tons there.

My family had a 52.

Several problems:

My wife has to travel for work.  Sorry she drives/flies around the region.  Not much I can do about that.

But my big gripe is with the Organic food.  I call BS.  Eating organic food "sometimes" saves 1.7 TONS of CO2?  Funny, I thought yields of Organic food were lower and required nearly 5 times the land to produce.  Not sure how non efficient farms that forgo pesticides and fertilizer saves any C02.

Bah, whatever.  I want a discount for owning a sailboat.

Humans produce 1 Ton of Co2 per year by breathing.  3 people in my house.  Add 150 lbs worth of dog.  Probably 4 tons. A horse exhales nearly 12 Tons of Co2 a year plus methane.  To do my 12,000 miles a year I'd need several horses.  Together, they would produce about twice the Co2 my Nissan does.

Down with horses!  Down with breathing!  That's it, from now I'm on holding my brea

Wow! 92.

Kinda funny that the meat question shot the numbers up so high!

I know my number was high, but I am selling carbon offsets if anyone is interested.  I'm gonna use the funds to buy more fuel efficient heated seats in my SUV.

I am also switching to 100% terrestrial products.

Hey, I too will sell carbon offsets.  I'll do one better and buy 1) A highbrid vehicle and 2) New sails for my boat.  Give to me, not that cheat above!

My carbon offsets are showroom fresh.  Don't settle for used offsets from Cannon Fodder.

My carbon offsets come with an autographed picture of Al Gore aboard his Gulf Stream 4.

After all, he invented offsets. And. . .by purchasing from me, Generation Capital Management (who owns over 30 companies and 180 websites selling carbon offsets in various forms to freekin morons) won't get a penny.  Neither will old Al, who has already made over $66 million from GCM distributions.

Scored a 68.  DANG!  I was hoping for 100.

How do I buy down to zero again?  I've purchased all my sin away, too.

Gawd, how are you guys managing near 100? That's frickin terrible. If this makes you feel guilty, that's because it should :) Stop turning taking care of the environment into a partisan issue. EVERYONE lives on the earth.

Our output is 49 here.. not fantastic but much better than average. We recycle probably 75% of our trash, I can't imagine throwing away all the cardboard, glass, etc that we recycle.

I didn't like the organic food question, either.  It seemed like a local food question would make more sense.

But look how much joy I brought TulNoFo!  5 minutes worth of high hilarity and quipitude!  I feel so validated.

My household got a 65. My truck and work airline trips was half of those.

This is too simple a calculator.

Here is one for recycling...

Hm ... the calculator decided that I don't save any trees a year because I don't recycle the Sunday paper.

It did not ask me if I actually ever had a physical Sunday paper in my hot little hands in the first place.

How about this one?  No sound effects or fancy mysterious pipe flow chart, but similar idea behind it ... and I got to say if I took the Sunday paper or not before it ran my numbers:

Your guilt footprint might be 49, but the SMUG cloud over your house is huge.  Of George Clooney proportions even!  Tulsa cannot afford to have to issue smug alerts this early in the year.  Please act while you can or we'll have the perfect storm of self-satisfaction that will be more devastating than even the recent ice storm!  Remember, EVERYONE lives on this earth!
