Title: at&t takes a nap
Post by: patric on January 08, 2008, 12:49:31 AM
(TULSA, Okla.) January 7 - Many Tulsans who tried to make a call with their cell phone tonight were out of luck.
http://www.fox23.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=1af17cd7-5714-4221-88d8-e70424008a7a

AT&T says its cell phone service was knocked out by a computer software problem.  That software was installed just last night, but malfunctioned this afternoon.

AT&T got service back up around 7:30 this evening.

Because of this problem, cell phone users also couldn't call 911.

If this happens again, Tulsa police say you should find the nearest landline in an emergency.  They also remind you that 911 calls from pay phones are free.

Many were upset there was no way to communicate on ATT phones. A quick reminder for them of what life was like before 1982.

Did Verizon users have an issue today if they were communicating with ATT customers?

No one could call an AT&T cellular customer from any phone and no AT&T customers could make a call.

I could receive calls but not call out.

SMS and Data seemed to be working as well.

Ditto - could receive, but not call out. With no land-line, it was frustrating.

I was worried I hadn't paid my bill! Even reset my iPhone, thinking it was software-related. I'm so glad you posted this, Patric.

I could call land lines and non-ATT cells, but not receive calls.  I'm on a G3 network.  My internet and email always worked.

Weird deal, but up now.

I'm far enough back in the office that I lose signal when I'm sitting at my desk if I don't put my phone on the desk.  Sometimes it will lock out and not allow me to call after that.  I re-booted the phone at least four times on the way home- still no luck.  I was able to check VM about 6pm finally- not sure how that happened if the system was out till 7:30.

I thought something was wrong with my phone!  We couldn't make or receive calls last night.

Wonder why the other stations had no coverage?
Does anyone know how widespread the outage was?  I was freaking out and I still have a landline! [:)]

And again...

AT&T Data Network Goes Dark
http://www.wirelessweek.com/article.aspx?id=157086

AT&T's wireless data networks went down in the Southeast and Midwest United States yesterday, causing users to be without e-mail and the Internet on their mobile phones for most of the workday.

http://www.intomobile.com/2008/01/31/att-edge-network-is-down-att-data-network-blackouts-rolling-through-midwest-and-southeast-us.html
"The problem seems to be related to six GGSNs (Gateway GPRS Support Nodes) having 'rolled over.'"  AT&T is currently upgrading it's 3G upstream limit to 500-800Kbps nationwide.

Couldnt find any reports of outages today, but did  see where they are raising the price of DSL after the dial-up price increase last month was so popular.

oh, and adding another $.50 "fee" to Oklahoman's landline bills.

Sounds like it's the Corporation Commission napping this time.

AT&T's fastest "elite service" is still some 12 dollars cheaper a month then Cox's fastest service.  Not to mention you have "free use" of their wireless hotspots around town for your laptop as well.  I would say it's still a value for what you are getting.

Cox's hotspots are free whther you use them or not and I'm only paying $17 for about 8M download right now, but that's a bundle price.
