I'm used to the little kids across the street banging their pots and pans at midnight on NYE and one of my other neighbors to find some sort of fireworks louder than last year.
This year, there was a new sound in the sky. Someone was firing what sounded like a Chinese SKS with a ten round clip in the air. They must have re-loaded at least ten times.
My neighbor with the loudest fireworks said he thought it was a mile or so north northwest of here, definietly an SKS, definitely not blanks. Of course he might have been partially deafened by his own fireworks and Irish Whiskey. From my house, it literally brought back memories of the sounds of Viet Nam combat on the evening news when I was a child.
No I did not return fire with my own SKS, or M & P 15 before you ask Cannonfodder! A night in jail just didn't sound fun tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

I heard a lot of fireworks, shouting, and myself popping some champagne corks - but no definite shooting.
Will an SKS/AK or any gas powered rifle shooting blanks semi-automatically? I'm not sure you build the requisite pressure without lead in the barrel.
There was somebody firing a six-shot weapon around 21st and Mingo. It would take them about a minute to reload, then they would fire again. This went on for at least 10 cycles.
Maybe they were shooting at rats at the Marina Apartments.
Lots of fireworks in my neighborhood, me included! I heard a few gunshots but nothing like at my old house where there would be be buckshot or something like it landing on my patio. It got so bad that we quit going outside around midnight on NYE.
I briefly entertained the idea of firing a 150 grain round out my muzzle loader with some loose wadding, but thought better of it. That is a very loud round especially when it echos off trees.
I had my 90 round drum feed on.....Sorry Conan....I thought you had an MP5K.....Oh discharging a fire-arm in the city limits is a misdemeanor.....

Reenactors use 65 grains of black powder rolled into paper cartridges for battlefield demonstrations. You get burnt confetti instead of a Mine' ball landing on somebody's head -- much safer bang but still verboten in the city.
Living in midtown it was roman candles and firecrackers to the south and semi- to full-auto to the north. Easy to distinguish when you have side-by-side comparisons.

I fired off a few rounds out of the AR but left the SKS in the safe.
J/K, I left both in the safe.
Last year my friend and I loaded up his 1865 Navy with paper wads and let loose on the moon. Probably still not the most responsible thing, but sparks out of a black powder gun - especially with an empty load, are just neat. Shooting actually rounds is simply retarded, if nothing else there stands a good chance of putting a hole in my roof.
Next year I vow to blow something up. Though, my sobriety level come midnight is such that it may be best that I again neglect the great American tradition of celebration by explosion.
The people across the street had a party for a bunch of high school kids. There were plenty of fireworks, but I was real impressed with the sheer number of kids who were banging on pots and pans.
It reminded my of the old Lucy episode where Ricky and her try to get out of their lease. I believe they called it the "Nertz to the Mertz Combo".

The city ordinance makes no distinction between live rounds and blanks, which was pretty shortsighted because the people they were targeting will just load up live rounds since the penalty is the same. All the ordinance did was make it harder for film and commercial makers to use blanks in the city, and criminalize graveside ceremonies.
Patric - I imagine they failed to make a distinction because doing so would make prosecution nearly impossible. The excuse, "it was just a blank" would usually be impossible to disprove. Especially if the shots went into the air.
Still - failure to make noted exceptions for commercial ventures and listed ceremonial activities (say color guards, or military rights, or whatever) a pretty bad over site as well as indicative of most legislating - and something I did not realize. So, my statement about shooting the 1865 Navy was pure fiction, made up to make myself feel like a big man. [;)]
