Title: Cold... so cold! (those without power)
Post by: cannon_fodder on December 12, 2007, 04:40:23 PM
Just thought I would take a roll call of those without power.  I realize the irony of doing so on a machine that requires power... but many/most people have internet at work.  So anyway.  Incidentally my office has no power - but we got a generator hooked up.

I remain without power at my house near 28th and Louisville.  Most of my area appears to be.  I have a fireplace and gas stove so I'm keeping it about 55 (stove on/off for extra heat now and then).

I spent the last 2 days chainsawing 28th St. clear, so if you live near there you can thank me by giving coffee to any utility crew you see!  I burned ~2.5 gallons of gas in my little chainsaw.  I had neighbors who had cars crushed, roofs smashed, and many fences squished.  I think I met JNE as I was thinking of clearing another limb (it was sagging and not broken upon closer inspection so I let it be).

I got VERY used to the creeeeeek, crunch crunch SNAP ::silence:: rustle rustle CRASH!  Unbelievable.

Anywho, looking for some comradery with anyone else still lacking 20th Century amenities.

Prattville area, Hwy 97 and 41st.  Still nothing, really looks like next week before we will see power, thankful for friends who have been letting me, hubby (whose mostly working) and two kids bunk up.  Added more kids to the fold today, their gas fireplace quit working so they had NO source of heat.  Not fun at all!

No power.  Generator for 1 fridge and one lamp.  Gone through all of my wood that I can burn this year.  Guess I'll have to start on the green stuff.

Have power at my office... so much for "not working on the North Side."  There are more power trucks on the N. Side than my neighborhood.

Still cold at my house.

I'm on the B.A. side Inteller that may be why.
Spoon, you are lucky to have a generator but, I don't think this is a good time to run out of firewood. Saw some on craigslist today.

No power at 81st and Toledo, although all the commercial businesses in the area seem to have been on for days.

Apparently the residential customers are at the end of the line, according to someone I know whose son works for PSO.

The Greens (BA side) has had power since Tuesday.  I imagine Millicent Crossing (Tulsa) got it then too.

Is there any way to tell if your area has power up if you aren't there?

We hightailed it out of there and are visiting family in Arkansas.  The snow coming means that we'll probably stay away for a few more days ... but I would really like to go home already.

No power in Florence Park anywhere west of Florence Ave.  It's 40 degrees in my house.  How do we keep our pipes from freezing this weekend?

1) if you have an answering machine call it.
2) Call a fax machine
3) alarm?

Otherwise, there is a map on PSO website that gives some indication of progress:
http://www.psoklahoma.com/news/storm/docs/TulsaIceStormRecovery%20_12_13_08_1500.pdf
http://www.psoklahoma.com/news/

If you are in or near a restored area I would call PSO to confirm.  Otherwise, just hold on I guess!

This works only if you don't have Cox phone service. It has also been down since this started, and even though I had my power restored yesterday (thank goodness!) I still have no telephone, and my alarm beeps from time to time to remind me there's a problem with the phone lines, as well as I have a trouble light lit on my alarm panels.

Cox has no idea when/if service will be restored.

Keep this in mind, anyone considering Cox: they do not have reliable phone service, and if your phone goes out, it's often days before it's restored.

Here is what I'd do, if it were possible.  I'd shut off my water at the meter and shut off water coming from the water heater.  Next, I'd find a way to access the line coming into the house, turn on a bathtub faucet while shooting compressed air and push all the water out.  You might be able to go the other way by using a pump or something to suck the water out.  What you want to end up with are pipes that just aren't full of water.  They can have some water in them.

Was that you with the two kids?  It's amazing how some of these trees have sprung back upright. Still no power or heat at my place (holding at about 43 degrees) We have some friends just over at about Yale and 36th with power so there have been some popular dinner parties over there. Just got power at my office today and this is my first time back on the interweb.  There are lots of crews on our street right now, so I'm hopefull..

Mine came on at 9:00 AM Friday.

What really saved me and kept my house inhabitable during this ordeal was the gas wall furnace in my den.  It is natural gas, gravity type wall furnace that needs no electricity (thermocouple for thermostat operation) and is powerful enough to heat my 400 sq. ft. den+.  It is vented to the outside with a flue through the roof.  I left the doors to the room open and it helped to partially heat the rest of the house too.  The temperature in my home never dipped below 59 degrees during my 4.5 days without electricity, thanks to my gas heater.

Our power came back on last night around 6PM.

What saved us was the generator hooked up to the blower on our heating system. We were able to keep most of the house around 70 w/ no problem. =] Also able to run a TV, few lights, freezer, etc. It worked out good and even tho it was ~$500 it was well worth it to keep the wife and baby warm! We also spent a couple nights with different friends who had power before buying the generator.

After getting a nice weekend away.I got to fly in after dark last night.  It was interesting to see the pathces of dark, but by and large the city was lit up like normal. I'm in Florence Park, and I still don't have power, and probably won't until the end of the week.  My electrician fixed my meter on Friday, but my block still doesn't have power, and they have to connect me to the line still...  Ugh, what a Christmas. :)

In my part of Red Fork, my power came on Sunday night, then winked out again for four hours Monday morning (feeder line went down).

We were OK. We use a woodstove for primary heat anyway, and have a gas hot water heater for doing dishes and showers. Add battery-powered LED lights to the mix, and we were pretty comfortable.

My biggest regret was not being able to watch any NFL games.

BTW, the psoklahoma.com map is misleading.

It shows Florence Park as 95% on.  No way.  Same thing with Florence Park south, on the other side of 21st, which is completely dark.

This is day nine for me to be without electricity and still waiting. I've learned a few things:

1. I can make a tasty pan of coffee using my one pan and the basket from my perkolator. No disaster will ever force me to drink instant. ICK!

2. Smoke alarms will wake me up in an instant. My neighbors replaced their candles with the flashlight I gave them. Geesh.

3. If you dial 411 to get to the power company's customer service, you will be connected to a real person. I've talked to a real person every day. In fact I'm going to do it now, be right back. BINGO, successfully talked to a person and resubmitted my outage, I'm going to be famous!

4. A pomeranian is the best foot warmer.

5. Make sure you have a common area for your stuff. Losing your keys in the dark sucks. Now is not the time to put them in a spiffy new location.

6. I too can look like a transient.

7. I too can smell bad.

8. They do not make battery operated hair dryers. Why?

And the most important thing I have learned?

I can no longer go naked onto my front porch, the bush that shielded the view is gone.....oooops, hello Mr. Jogger. Don't ask.

I'll keep you posted.

Maybe today.

A long-standing public policy decision to allow a proliferation of traffic control lights at cross streets BETWEEN major intersections added immensely to the difficulty of just getting around Tulsa during the power outage.

With the electrical outage, the traffic jams suffered at every major intersection without traffic control, were COMPOUNDED by non-functioning traffic control lights on side streets BETWEEN the major intersections.

East 71st Street was especially bad, between Riverside and Garnett.  I'm sure there are many other unsatisfactory experiences to relate.

How many traffic control lights are located on that 7 mile long major arterial?

They're working on College and Evanston in Florence Park....which should get the regular people on those streets back up.  People like me, who had meter damage, might have a few more days.  I'm shocked that PSO still can't give me an estimated day, considering that they are down to 6,000 right now!  It's been 10 days!!!
