Title: Generator?
Post by: tulsacyclist on December 12, 2007, 08:50:50 AM
Anyone got one that they are done using? Maybe you bought it to power your place and now your electricity is back on? =]

Or has anyone seen any local places w/ them in stock longer than 10 minutes? Being at work all day makes it hard to generator shop, unfortunately.

If so, lemme rent or buy it from you - that'd be great.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

Well I'd like to keep it under $500 but I realize I can't always make that a reality with the current demand.

well, if you have been sitting around without electricity for more than 48 hours you might as well just put on some more warm clothes and sit this one out because the stuff in the fridge is all ruined.

I'm more concerned about my 2 month old staying warm and the food in the freezer. You are correct, the food in the fridge is done for.

I am looking forward to throwing out some of the food in the refrigerator. My wife has salad dressings, pickles and bizarre sauces from months ago.

I put most of the meat and expensive stuff in ice chests in the garage where the temperature hasn't gotten above 35 degrees.

Ditto on the fridge.  I found stuff we don't remember buying.

Pep Boys is selling 90 $500 generators a day.  They have another shipment coming in tomorrow.

I hear that Westlake Ace is bringing in trucks full of generators and propane heaters, but have marked up the price of the generators by $200 ea. and the price of the heaters by $50 ea.  to "offset shipping".

With a 12qft crate size, I calculate on a 53' trailer this nets them $28,000 in extra profit.

Yeah. I think that'll cover shipping.  [;)]

Ah.. I found one on Craigslist today. $525 for a 5550W briggs and stratton. That'll work just fine for us.

That westlake stuff is indeed some bs. They coulda came up with a better excuse than that.

My office is running on a pair of those at the moment and doing just fine.  We paid more than $525 for them I can tell you.  Of course, we had our power disconnect and the generators wired to the building with a 500 gallon tank.  Which, oh joy of joys, means I can work.  As my boy sits here and sings random 8 year old songs at me... over and over... most involving something about "dad" to a familiar tune... which is great... the first few times.

Anyone hear when schools open back up?

Tulsa Public Schools are closed for the week.

Here is the press release...

For Immediate Release, December 12, 2007: Tulsa Public Schools officials canceled classes at all schools for the remainder of the week after a meeting on Wednesday to discuss power outages throughout the district. As of 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 66 of Tulsa Public Schools' 89 sites were without power according to Jim Spear, Chief General Operations Officer. He said while the number is down from 70 sites on Tuesday evening, there is no way to know for sure when enough schools will be back online to resume classes.

Preliminary assessments indicate no major damage at TPS schools or other sites; however TPS grounds crews are working hard to remove limbs from from school sidewalks, entry ways, driveways and parking lots. Workers are also replacing several windows that were broken by fallen limbs.

TPS Director of Maintenance Sue Ann Bell said her department is operating without power, email and internet. She said her supervisors will be able to ascertain a more accurate damage estimate as power is restored.

Tulsa Public Schools would like to remind its 42,000 student families and 6,500 employee families to check on elderly and/or frail neighbors and loved ones. If they have not been able to report their power outage, please use the following numbers to help notify local electric companies:

(888) 218-3919 Public Service Company of Oklahoma
(800) 522-6870 Oklahoma Gas & Electric
(918) 596-2100 Mayorâ„¢s Action Center (downed tree limbs)
211 or (800) 494-0275 Community Service Council (non=emergency assistance)

Please direct all media inquiries to Tami Marler, Director of Public Information for Tulsa Public Schools (marleta@tulsaschoo ls.org, (918) 605-6009).

You'd be surprised, UPS charged me over $100 to ship a guitar Ground. I have regularly paid 3 figures to ship equipment lighter than generators.

Oh this thing is great. Got it hooked up to the blower on our furnace so we got the house at around 70-73 for now. Wife and baby boy are staying rather warm, able to power a the lights on the Christmas tree (really lights up the room well) and several other items. Even if the electricity comes on today the generator was still a good buy. I'm just kickin myself for not owning one before the SHTF.

I discovered kids like to sleep in the cold.  Just throw them in flannels and bury them with blankets and they will hibernate for a long time.

I "have" a 5000W generator I loaned to a friend about five years ago.  This is the third outage I've lived through w/o it.  Time to repo the generator, I think.  I got one loaned to me from someone at work who never lost power.
