KTUL is reporting this morning (I can't find a link to the story on their website) the legislature is looking at a new license plate for Oklahoma, probably starting in 2009. The committee has narrowed down the selection to five, down from about a dozen.
The front runners: An image of the Indian that sits atop the capital dome, or an image of a cowboy doing a rope trick.
Now, I'm all in favor of state heritage and all, but, once again, I'm going to complain about 'everything Oklahoma' having to center around cowboys and Indians. This state will never move forward if the only thing we can promote to the rest of America are cowboys and Indians. Surely, we can find something in all those designs that says Oklahoma is progressive.
I can't find a link to the final designs under consideration. If anyone can, please post some images.

I agree, Wilbur. I was thinking the same thing when I saw the news story about it.
Argh... cowboys and Indians.
I like our current standard plates. They hint at the native culture and even say "native America" but do not go over the top. The Indian on the dome is a horrible idea. Wyoming already has a roping cowboy on a bronco.
Maybe they are trying to increase sales of vanity plates.
I'd prefer they drop the "native america" slogan altogether. Not that I hate it, I just think it's played out.
I really like the "Watcher" statute on top of the dome. I don't see what's wrong with it--there's a reason it beat out the "American," and that's because it's a beatiful, stoic sculpture. Plus, our Indian heritage has got to be the most unique aspect of our state history.
That said, I just really loved the "Oklahoma is OK!" plates. I wish they would make that an option--so retro, so entertaining.
'Oklahoma is OK' was a nationwide joke at our expense. Lets aim a little higher. "Oklahoma - More than OK"
Maybe it's just the kitsch in me . . . I bought a "Don't Hate the 918" shirt last time I was downtown. I suppose there's not much room for irony on state license plates.
With all due respect to Wilbur, I *like* cowboys and Indians. They're cool symbols. I certainly don't find them *un*-progressive.
To me, not having a cowboy or Indian or Will Rogers (he's both) on an Oklahoma plate would be like South Dakota not having Mount Rushmore on its plate, Florida not having an orange, or Colorado not having an image of the Rocky Mountains.
I'd much rather have a cowboy or Indian on our plate than some lame motto like "Wander" (Indiana) or "Stars Fell On" (Alabama). Or worse, a listing of the state's tourism Web site (georgia.gov).
Nothing wrong with "Native America". Just reduce the plate by 30% and add some revenue boosting, like everything else:

There's more referrance to the indian than the cowboy in this state. Take the state's name "Oklahoma" for instance. It's a Choctaw word, meaning "Land of the Redman". Oklahoma is the biggest indian reservation in the US. It's where most of the tribes in the United States were eventually relocated to.

there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe he owns a carpet business. I think oversensitivity to vanity plates is SO stupid. People show out around me a lot I think because they read my plate and it offends them. People really need to get a life.
If they would give people a standard plate that looks good I think they'd have a winner. I really think it needs to be something more along the lines of the Route 66 plates.
BTW, there is really NO excuse in this state to not get a plate you like:

OH! C&ap! Now we have to change the name of the state, because "Redman" is considered a derogatory term for native-american. Stupid racist Choctaw!
How about Nopowerland or we could just go with North Texas?
