Title: New Name for ORU?
Post by: patric on November 26, 2007, 11:20:57 AM
While some view the Roberts moniker as damaged goods, it's still one of Tulsa's better known identities.
Should ORU change it's name, and if so, what would  the best choice be to promote Tulsa?

I saw a segment on the news this morning where they were getting campus reaction to Robert's resignation.     One student referred to ORU as "God's University"  (and how God has a plan etc...)

So, how about GU?

Anyone remember the whole stink Oral started about 20 or 25 years ago when he suggested Jenks should change it's name "...to something with more 'sparkle'"?

I believe his suggestion was something along the lines of "Riverside".

Maybe ORU can be re-named Jenks University.

I really don't know.  IMHO when you pass your University on to your son you are just asking for trouble.  Getting rid of him, from everything I have heard, is a step in the right direction. I hope ORU recovers and thrives - its good for Tulsa.

For a new name?  How about . . . I got nothing.

ORU is probably fine. Many universities started out as religious in nature. Over time they "evolve" lol, and become more secular. Its just part of the natural "evolution" [:P] of things.

You've got to watch for improper names. It shouldn't sound like a televangelist named it... oh wait, too late. [:D] Anywho, in all honesty I think the name needs to stay. I get sick and tired of universities who change their name for the sake of a new reputation. Only necessity should be reason enough for a change, such as if they took over another school and needed to simplify, or extend, the name they presently have.

Assuming they want to keep the proud Roberts name:

Opulent Roberts University
Ostensibly - still Roberts University
Ostracized Roberts University
Ousted Roberts University
Outcast...
Overweening...

the only adjective I have come up with thus far for R is "retard" and I don't want to go there since I actually respect many of the students/alumni.  Just not their (former) leadership.

WHO R U

and here's their new fight song.....

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"

I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair

chorus:
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)

I took the tube back out of town
Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin

I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way

Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ...

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

(chorus)

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees

I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still recieve your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

(chorus)

Great deal for Tulsa. David Greene is a good person. They won't be flying around in Gulf Streams. And all I can say is whew. That was a close one to catastrophe. Very good news indeed.

I hope it is Mardel U.

That was the actual reply to Oral for his [more than] suggestion by the Jenks City Council. It's in the minutes.

maybe we should keep the name, and get rid of the Christians. Then it would be a decent place to consider for higher learning.

Unfortunately, that is the reputation ORU has created for all Christians.  ORU has damaged the outside perception of all Chrisitans, as well as Tulsa and Oklahoma.  600 ft. tall Jesus giants, locking oneself in a tower until people give money, and now misappropriation of funds, possible tax evasion?  I doubt the ORU name will ever fully recover from all the bad press.  And don't even get me started on how there was once an institution of medical science that didn't believe in concepts such as evolutionary biology...

Although yet to be substantiated... it is rumored  that Richard Roberts now calls the University "IOU"..

Just when you think things can't get any worse at ORU, Pat Robertson comes calling.

Way to shore up the credibility and integrity of the "University".

I was hoping they would close and the campus would be bought by a progressive private school.  I'm an optimist.  The buildings are important but generally ORU is one of the reasons Tulsa isn't as cool as it used to be.  I mean we had plenty of religious nuts when I was growing up here but not like now.  I've come to think that evangelical Protestants are pretty darn strange across the board.  Their services are like really bad group therapy sessions, with these old guys hopping around and shouting and acting out.  Not like staid old Modern St. Andrew's Presbyterian on Yale where I had catechism.

Now thats the most "interesting" thing I have heard yet.  Richard Roberts et al were just a bunch of amatures mostly concerned with what was going on in their own narrow realm. Pat Roberston and his institutions play for keeps and if joined with ORU would start actively playing a more purposeful role in local political, social and community matters. They carefully make long range plans, quietly, steadily, put their people in place, and make things happen the way they want. Nothing wrong with that, everyone does it. But they do it well. So you would definitely have to be aware that it will potentially be a new game in town.
