The Canadian chick will open the new BOK arena.
She is a major star.
I was just hoping for someone I like.
She cracks me up how she says "HLURRVE" instead of "Love"
So much for the Clapton and Elton John conspiracies...

Why? This isnt the opening act I don't think. She just announced the tour which happened to include a Tulsa date.
Not the opening act:
From the World: http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=071107_1__imgsr25553
My bad. I thought she was the opener.
She sure gets a lot of radio play.
I bought a few radio ads on FM96 and felt compelled to listen in. Every time I turned on that station, a Celine song was playing.
anyone with a regular las vegas show has passed from "major star" into the "burned out hack" category... maybe we'll get danny ganz to open the arena[:P]

THAT MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE.......
Lame.
The tickets to her shows in Vegas start at $80 and go way higher. They are all sold out way in advance.
She finishes her five-shows-a-week, four year vegas gig in mid December, then plays around the world without returning to America until mid August.
She certainly is one of the biggest stars in the world.

she is a major star? no, she is a has been.
right from the paper...
"her first concert since 1999"
no one wants to listen to her sappy dreck. hell she probably signed to the BoK because it will be hard enough for her to find 18k people who want to hear her.
she is a freakshow act that should be in Branson.
yep, no accounting for taste...
celine is the mcdonald's of the music industry...
Here is how to sign up for her fan club.

Are you kidding me?????
It's not her first concert since 1999--she's been singing to sold-out crowds in Vegas for 5 straight years... This is her first
World Tour since then... MAJOR difference there.
Here we get the top-selling female artist of all time and people complain...My God.
I predict that once tickets go on sale, it will sell out within 4 hours.

Celine is good, but terribly overrated.
How about Michael Jackson? Can't wait till he goes back on tour with the jackson 5.
My concert-going days are not yet done. I get back to T-Town, and I imagine this BOK Center will have something going that I'll want to see. And while I like Celine, I probably would not go see her.

Until then it is just has beens like Dion and Cher....when there is not a some redneck pissing contest like UFC or "wrasslin"

Exactly why she will probably sell out in this town. Is Barry Manilow still alive? Bet he would sell out here too.
While she "Celine Dion" is not someone I would go see, may suit some peoples tastes. They should indeed try for a wide variety of different artists appealing to different audiences. Especially in that first year to get people excited about one show or another and have Tulsa show that it can have good turnouts.
Having this arena is another positive thing for having good suburban and metro growth. Since Tulsa hasnt had the growth its up to the growth in the suburbs to supply the number of people needed to support good shows coming to town. If the people show up, it will be taken notice of in the industry and good acts will more likely start coming to Tulsa.
I bet we will even start to draw people from the Fayetteville, Springdale, Bentonville area for concerts. We should definitely advertise our arena and its shows in those markets. I have friends from there, who when they visit Tulsa like it, but dont really think of it as a place to "get out of town and go do something". Having good concerts and also a good club scene downtown could change that. Kind of make Tulsa be to that area like Dallas is to Tulsa. The place you go when you want to go to the "big, city" and hang out. As odd as it sounds to actually consider Tulsa as being that, even to them lol.

If you build it, they will come....
First, and foremost, I do not like Miss Dion (other than the SNL skits mocking her).
HOWEVER, this is a very big deal for Tulsa. Contrary to the opinion that she is a "has been" she is the 6th highest grossing artist in the world in 2006. She racked in $85,200,000.00 without leaving Las Vegas. More than ANY of the acts we listed as 'wants' other than the Stones.
http://www.forbes.com/2007/01/24/money-concert-music-tech-media-cx_lr_0123topmusic_slide_6.html?thisSpeed=15000
She is leaving for her world tour in Feb. and playing Johannesburg, Capetown, London, Paris, Munich, Toronto and the like. Then coming to the States and playing Phili, DC, the Garden, Atlantic City, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, KC, LA, Denver, Atlanta, Houston, San Antonio and a little stop over in TULSA. Take note that she is NOT in OKC, Branson, Little Rock, nor Dallas. She is in Tulsa.
http://www.pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?By=Artist&Content=CELDIO&PSKey=Y&Sort=Date&Date_From=Today&Date_To=11-07-2009&Market=N&Page=2
The Target Center, United Center, the Garden, Staples Center, The Palace, KC's new Sprint Center and the BOk Center. Not bad company.
Per my scheme, lets hope this is the one for the FOPS. We still need Garth + Underwood, and Lips + Peppers. Then I'd be happy.
So while I do not enjoy this entertainer and will likely not be attending, it is still a really good sign for our management team.

Your opinion is irrelevant. The fact is she is the biggest female star of all time. Obviously there are quite a few people out there who want to listen to her "sappy dreck".

She hits the 7,500,000 mark on the Google Popularith Meter. Not too shabby.
So this reads as if the promoter will bring this artist to Tulsa, she will sing a few songs, dazzle a few lights and extract a bundle of cash from the local area to take back to their village to spend with their local car dealer, grocer, mall and other businesses.
Interesting how folks in a small city are mezmorized by a single human being.
Reminds me of an Andy of Mayberry episode. "Well Golly Andy, I'm takin' Imagene to the big concert on Saturday, you and Helen goin'?"
Only in Oklahoma the big question if anyone books an event on too of one of these is typically, are they gona be showing the OU Football game or the NASCAR race on the Jumbo Tron during the concert? LOL

That ranks here in the top 10 of celebs that will have visited Tulsa.
One would think that having Garth Brooks would be the big ticket for the Grand Opening. At least most of the money he earns has more potential of staying in the Oklahoma economy. Grand Opening Should be an All Star line up of all famous Oklahoma entertainers including Garth, Leon, Hanson, Carrie Underwood, Roy Clark, Arlo Guthrie, Gary Busy, Mazeppa etc. And even have a Free Style Show with Oklahoma's own, "Cowboy" Kenny Bartram. And a suprise autograph table featuring the OU Football team.

She is hilarious. Cirque du Celine!
I'm no fan of Celine Dion.
But I'd have to be delusional to say that she isn't a nice coup for the new arena.
She's sold 200 million records. She's made humongous millions of dollars by not budging an inch in Vegas (and whoever says that Vegas is for has-beens is talking about the old Vegas; those rules no longer apply in the new Vegas).
Looking over her itinerary, she's gonna draw from all over Texas, Colorado, Arkansas and southern Kansas for the Tulsa show. The next-closest gig is Kansas City. She doesn't even play Texas until the following January, and that's in San Antonio and Houston. Dallas isn't on the last at all.
So, yeah, she's going to sell out BOK Arena fast.
Mad props for calling out on Mike Patton RM. If, as I assume, you are referring to the musician Mike Patton I'm proud to relate (and brag that I have seen him in concert with Mr. Bungle 3x, Faith No More 1x, as well as with Fantômas. If there is some other Mike Patton out there, let me know as I was horribly confused.

Mike Patton is an act I'd go see. And since Sepultura is coming out with a new album next year, they should get them too.
How about Ozzfest, Lollapalooza or Monsters of Rock?

^ LOL. I hope she doesn't leave any Celine stank on our new arena. I know a lot of people like her but I can't understand why.
She will be a big draw, a lot of folks will drive all night to hear her sing that she droove all noght eh.

My thoughts too rwarn. I won't be buying a ticket, but I am sure her performances here will be a sell out. Not every act to play at the new arena will be to everyone's taste, but the big draws, such as Dion, will sure help foot the bill. The more they can pack the house and keep future maintenance costs off of we taxpayers, I am all for it.
On NPR, they occasionally have a segment they call "Vocal Impressions" where they ask listeners to describe a famous person's voice. (B/c it's NPR, the descriptions tend towards metaphor...but are often poetic or funny.) One of the famous people they did recently was Celine Dion. Here are the "impressions" people had of her voice:
A Siamese cat stretched immodestly over a black leather couch.
A melted moon pie on a dashboard.
Rubbing pomade into the hair of a person I don't like.
The bridesmaid's toast at a wedding.
The sound of wealth becoming pedestrian.
The superior smirk on every homecoming queen you ever hated.
Tired love.
The last thing you want to hear on a large ship in the middle of the ocean.
The most ornate Christmas lights that are put out at Halloween and are still flashing at Easter.
Water flowing without ripples.
The way you feel after a really good haircut.
A warm bed with clean sheets.
The gum you find on the bottom of your shoe just after getting off the Ferris wheel.
What every mother's lullaby sounds like to an infant.
A beautiful wool sweater you never put on because it irritates you.
"The most ornate Christmas lights that are put out at Halloween and are still flashing at Easter."
Considering they are trying to sell tickets A YEAR IN ADVANCE....this is about right.

Mike Patton has a new badass album called Peeping Tom.
But I assume they're both just as popular.
Isn't that what you meant Michael?
So I am sure Celine Dion will sell out, and financially it will probably be a good start to our arena as far as drawing an audience, but every time I say Celine Dion I inexplicably throw up a little in my mouth.

The best and most logical quote of this thread, I believe. I am not a big Celine Dion fan either, but it's a great coup for the BOK, and others will follow in time. Major acts do play in Oklahoma. During the past five years the OKC Ford Center has hosted many big names, including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, The Who, Elton John & Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, John Mellencamp, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake & Christina Aguilera, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, The Dave Matthews Band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Creed and many others.
An earlier poster commented that it is "interesting how folks in a small city are mesmerized by a single human being." If that is the case then Las Vegas must be a small city too, as they seem quite enamored with Celine Dion as well.
