From the helicopter video shots provided by KTUL, it looks like the west side of the formerly grand hotel has a fairly serious fire happening right now.
How interesting that this happens on the second day of demolition.
Implying QT is asking for assistance from TFD to carry some of the asbestos away?
Anyone living over there might want to take a break from breathing for a bit....
is the old city hall burning yet?
or the crappy house next door to me?

Wait a minute, didn't the last high profile property the city condemned burn down? Where was Kathy this afternoon?

[:D] We should be so lucky.
Wow the news reporters are so intelligent.....
"The Smoke is clean and safe"
"We think the smoke and fire is coming from inside the building"
Way to go Ch. 2.....
KOKI is saying that the mattresses and carpet thrown out of the building was what caught on fire.
There were still freaking mattresses in there? That must be nasty.
I assume (well, hope) that since demolition started yesterday, that asbestos abatement had already been completed. I live nearby, but luckily the wind is blowing the other way right now :D
The concept and voice-over is lame, but here's a video showing some fairly recent interior shots: http://one.revver.com/watch/74345/flv/affiliate/30734
Asbestos FIBER is what I understand to be dangerous. Asbestos itself does not burn anyway, that's why it was used on parts of the Saturn 5 Rocket. But I still wouldnt breath it. [:I]
Probably a little red phosphorous in the carpet left over from meth lab cookers. A little friction and there you go, fire!

Does anyone know if that hotel is made out of wood, or does it have a steel frame? If it is all wood it can be darn dangerous. Wood collapses easy in fires.

I didn't know how tall it was. There have been buildings made totally out of wood in the past. One that is still around is the Grand Hotel on Macknaw Island in Michigan, it's 2 or 3 stories high and something like 600' long and all wood. Most other large all wood buildings have been distroyed by fire.

The twin towers were steel and concrete and they seemed to have burned with a little help.
Is the city or insurance company now obligated to clean up the rubble ? You can't beat them as they deal from the bottom of the deck.

Burning jet fuel is a completely different story.
The steel in the twin towers sat in 2000 degree flames for a hour and became glowing red hot and got soft and pulled away from their supports. Then once the supports gave way the tons of building weight above the weak area just collasped down. The steel did not melt, no regular fire can make enough heat to melt steel.

So you're saying it wasn't the explosives planted there before the planes hit.
edit : to clarify, that is a joke. we don't need the thread going that direction...please
"They pulled it".....
Someone call altruism suffers...
They built a 3 or 4 story hotel out of wood here in Columbus, Ohio about 5 years ago. It's across the street from a Wendy's Restaurant, right off I-70 & Rome-Hilliard Road. The nane escapes me now. I know it's all wood because I seen it go up when they were building it. I guess they would have all the up to date fire prevention systems in the building and fire escapes and things like that.
