Title: D-Fest!!!!
Post by: OurTulsa on July 17, 2007, 10:08:49 PM
Are you KIDDING!?!

I'm putting this in development because this music fest is one of the best things going on in downtown tulsa and is without a doubt one of the up and coming music fests in this county that is putting tulsa on the map.

http://www.dfest.com/index.html

Two days of music; Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28th.

This is rediculous, I can't believe that I/we have access to this much good music packed into two days for $20 (price includes admission for both days)!  Many of the bands playing could command that or much more for an individual show.

Flaming Lips on Friday, Amos Lee on Saturday, throw in a little Leon Russel, Limbeck, Jacob Fred, The Effects...I can't name all the good musicians.

I am all over the Continental on Friday before the Lips.  If you like Hip Hop/Jazz you must see The Urban Sophisticates.  They are refreshingly clean and come with good/entertaining messages and oh yeah their music is spectacular.  Erin Austin will follow with her strong voice and rock/jazz.

There will be some really good local acts mixed in.

If you go to the festival schedules you can reach the websites for each band and sample the music.

This fest provides a vast variety of music...a lot of rock/indie, some experimental, blues, jazz, hip hop, alt-country, I think our favorite homeless guitarist will even be there (if you walk 5th St. you know who I'm talking about).

This fest has been awsome the past few years and will probably be the best it's been this year!

I'm in for sure.  See you there Friday night at least.

And just think we didn't need a 200 million dollar icon or to hire SMG at a premium to get it. As far as the local acts go, I just wanted to get a plug in, and give a shout out to Sam and the Stylees. If you are a reggae fan and you plan on being at DFest, check them out, you won't be disappointed.

I plan on being there.  That much music for such a little price, how could you NOT go.

Anyone know what the street closing situation is for Dfest?  I see they're setting up their stage directly across the street from me and suspect I'm going to have some issues getting to/from home this weekend.

They're closing 1st St. from Cincy to Greenwood; 2nd St. from Cincy to Elgin Av; Detroit and Elgin Aves from the RR to 3rd St.
Those streets will be closed basically from 10a on Friday to 6a on Sunday.  The closing only impacts a few blocks, it shouldn't be an issue for anyone working anywhere downtown.  It's nothing a small detour won't cure.  If the closure of 2nd disrupts your 5pm race out of downtown just join the competition on Cinci to 8th and turn east to Hwy 75 for a quick jaunt north to your traditional spaghetti junction of 244 and 75.......ooooorrrrrrr walk outside after work...over to the Guapo, McNells, or Tsunami's for some great grub purchase yourself a $20 ticket and wait for the music to start up and enjoy the rest of the night.

If by chance you happen to live there...then I envy you and I still can't imagine that you should have too much of an issue.

I'm hearing that the Lips and Amos Lee are bringing quite a few people to D-Fest from out of the region.

It would be very cool to know what kind of economic impact this has/will have on our City.
Every indication is that the Fest will bring in more the 25K over the two days.  What does MayFest bring?  I can't remember what the numbers were last year but D-Fest just didn't seem that big at 18th/Boston.

What's great is this fest is not just another 18 - 25 yr. old punk kid rock fest.  There is a wide variety of genres being presented here.  While the punk adult/kid demographic will certainly have much to attract to there will also be some very good Alt/Country, Jazz vocalists, Hip Hop/Jazz (I'm telling everyone to get out and see Urban Sophisticates at the Continental at 9p on Friday), Classic Rock, and Indie/Roots.

This Fest will eventually is going to be great for our fair City.

Thanks for the info on the street closings.

Looking at my wristband, I just thought it might be cool if at next year's DFest the promoters could work to get free/discounted admission to local museums and other attractions, public golf courses, discounts at locally owned and operated shops and restaurants, discounted or free public transit, rental car discounts, hotel room discounts, etc. in a directory for concert goers that lasts the weekend to help promote the show and all the other unique attractions Tulsa has to offer. Great show! Great festival! I saw Seis Pistos, Forty Minutes from Hell, Stevedore and the Lips. I loved it when the Lips did the Stones cover, BTW. Festivals like the Blue Dome and Dfest give me immense hope that Tulsa can get back to where we once belonged. Muck Fayfest.

In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". (//%22http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_Lips%22)

After the Lips, I went to the Continental and saw the Chris Wray Quartet.  They were wonderful, and the perfect way to end the night!

Saw Approaching August and was very impressed.  Also stayed and watched Erin Austin with her amazing vocals and then of course the Lips.  Those guys freaking rock.  My favorite moment was when he was relaying the Mayor's comments about allowing pot smoking for just that day...priceless!
Great photos!

Tonight I am going to see local product Jesse Aycock at the Arnie's stage at 9p, straight out of Brooklyn, The Ladybug Transistor http://theladybugtransistor.com/ at the Continental 10p and of course Amos Lee at 11p.

This fest is something special.

Has anyone here bid on Wayne Coyne's couch on display at Dwelling Spaces?  You can bid on E-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Flaming-Lips-DFEST-UFO-Autographed-by-Wayne-Coyne-Couch_W0QQitemZ160138144343QQihZ006QQcategoryZ104742QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Finally, there is a sanctuary policy da Mare and I can agree on. Marijuana prohibition is a stupid waste of a potentially lucrative new source of tax revenues that clogs up our law enforcement and prison systems with typically non-violent, harmless offenders. Not to mention that the collateral damage of this prohibition is we have effectively squandered a safe, green, renewable resource in terms of medicinal marijuana, industrial hemp, and biofuel uses.  BTW, clove cigarettes? Is that what the Whirled calls a left handed cigarette these days?

LOL!  I didn't get to see the beginning of that, but knowing now that KT's face was up there, I wish I'd seen it!

What was the deal with the Factor being 45 minutes behind???  I was about to die of suffocation up there!

Cabs? Tulsa? Surely not! [;)]

I imagine she would have been more upset by the chorus of boos, howls of you suck, and unfriendly hand gestures she got when she came on stage(I swear it wasn't just me).
