Ever dreamed of making the streets outside your abode more livable, pedestrian-friendly, and community-oriented?
City Repair in Portland, Oregon hosts an annual Village Building Convergence where hundreds of people come together to build diverse projects for the benefit of their communites and to take back their streets via a process known as the Intersection Repair.
This involves painting streets with a high-visiblity mural that creates a public square for residents to gather and one which gently encourages drivers to slow down when approaching these spaces. Over time the neighbors further enhance the transformation by adding amenities like benches, community bulletin boards, and introducing gardens & art. As you'll see, the possibilites are endless.

Many neighborhoods in Tulsa can do this!!!

I think that money is long since gone.
Well if anyone, anywhere in the city, wants to do this and can get permission. I will buy the paint.

no, i know my neighborhood applied and got the funds they just havent done the work yet. so the money is still there.
I finally followed up on this idea and have found out that Public Works will not allow such an idea. The response was that this would distract drivers and make the intersection more dangerous..... One of the primary points -- to distract drivers, slow them down as well as make the neighborhoods a little more interesting...reinforce an identity. Someone ought to do it anyway!

Give me a mini-garden with flowers, shrubs and trees over an animated LED sign any day.

Portland's City Repair started as a DIY, non-sanctioned, guerrilla movement. No one asked for any permission or permits. They just did it. That was the point. Who Owns Streets?
Since their guerrilla street repair days, against the wishes of PDOT, our PW equivalent, City Repair (http://cityrepair.org/) is mainstream PDX.
Of course, Sir Hardt and Zachary won't allow it. Just do it.

This is distracting but billboards that blast your eyeballs out of their sockets are just fine.

It's funny, but if we were to actually do something like this, I would totally join in. I would suggest a weekend however. There would be less witnesses and I wouldn't have to worry about getting fired from my job for taking off.

I see it's pm, not am. and on a friday. I'm good. Will check my paint levels.
Did you ever consider the liability of putting paint on the street?
What if it affects the ability to stop a car?
I know you guys are just taggers with real jobs, but I am against random people painting public property.
I like it.
In my neighborhood, I have an idea for a beautiful sunset mural at the intersection of 86th and Pittsburgh that says "Slow The Fu@& Down!"

LOL...I live in a neighborhood a little like that by the Traffic Circle. I'm tempted to install remote controlled in-street spike strips for those idiots who blow through the stop sign at the corner going 50 mph down a residential street. I know, they don't really exist. Time for me to get to inventin'!

I live on a neighborhood equivelant of the local drag strip, I've been contemplating these spikes for years. Maybe I should toss you some drawings.
Every now and then take a 2x4 and use a cheep ramset nail gun from Depot to make your own speed bump.

Lasts a few weeks.
Not that I would ever do anything like that.

That's a great documentary...kinda reminds of the video provided in the initial post.
The intersection repair at 3rd/Kenosha - are we talking abstract chaos, BYOP, and color as you will and where you want in the street? Or, is there an intended design with intended colors? I don't want to bring pink to the party only to find out it's not part of the program. I'm glad you're attempting to make something happen just want to come prepared (if that's necessary).
Looks like the idea is catching on...this one's on the other side of our great big American island.

Got leftover paint in the garage impatiently waiting for the next Recycle Day? Put it to good use, Intersection Repair!
Before something is done, it probably would be a good idea to look at what options one could take in painting. I'd hate to throw some latex paint down and have an environmental disaster on our hands. I know TU does paintings on the street by the stadium for Homcoming. Any idea what they use?

Why is it when anyone suggests doing something new in this town its considered "dangerous" and suspect? Remember community gardens? lol Its something that cities all over do.
I am sure we should at least try to get permission and figure out who we need to talk to though.
However, if someone is going to be a rebel and do one of these, there definitely should be a plan of attack and a design and not just a free for all. If it looks like a terrible mess, thats not going to leave a good impression. And you definitely need to make sure you have enough people to pull it off. I was asked to "help" with a mural downtown that was supposed to be done with lots of artists. I came up with the over all plan and design to which other artists could then add their bit to it. I and a couple of other people pretty much ended up doing the whole base part with only one artist so far having added their piece to it. Plus, someone definitely needs to be in charge and you should have a meeting beforehand.

I would suggest exterior, water based paint, satin finish.
I hope the designs you paint aren't TOO pretty because you would probably need to repaint every year or so, unless you like your art extra grimy.

Good catch.
Yep. Great way to kill any new ideas that happen in this town! Who needs RecycleMichael?! ;D :-*
What if the lines (such as the crosswalk or lane markers) were repainted, but with fun colors or patterns? Then, you haven't really altered the streetscape in a way that could make it more dangerous, but have instead added a bit of visual flair.
