Word around the campfire is that there is a microbrewery opening just off sixth street near Utica.
Not a brewpub, but a brewery. They are aiming to have product flowing by Oct.
Hope they have better luck than the brew pubs did.
Not sure how much success a brewery can have in this town or state since all they can brew is 3.2 beer. I believe that is why all the previous attempts have failed.
They can brew regular beer, right? There are tons of out of state microbrews sold here that aren't 3.2, so I don't think a local microbrew would have to be 3.2.
You are allowed to import beer that is stronger then 3.2 into the state, but you can't brew beer within the state that is stronger then 3.2.
There used to be (or still is) a Tulsa branded beer (I don't remember the name - wasn't it from the Tulsa Brewing Company?) that had to be brewed out of state, then shipped here, so it could be stronger then 3.2.
Microbreweries flourish in most local cities because they have the freedom to brew any style/strength of beer. When you are limited to 3.2, as in this backward state, it's hard to make a beer with any flavor.
I thought that the 3.2 thing was only at the distribution end. I thought you could brew stronger beer so long as it was distributed out of state or through our own warm beer, liquor store racket franchise arrangement.

my threadjack post in this topic last month was about this project...
glad to hear they finally found a building...
i believe CL is right... i've spoken to Mike Lalli at choc about this very topic... CL's explanation was my understanding...

In the old manufacturing building on the SE corner? There also was an old ice plant nearby that would be cool to refurbish. Hope it works cause it would fit well into the plans over there.

You can also serve it as liquor by the drink in a local pub, a la Coach's (brewed in Norman, served statewide).

Actually, Wilbur, you can brew strong beer in Oklahoma that is sold in liquor stores. There is a brewery in Oklahoma City that has been operating since 2004, brewing Huebert's Old Tyme Lager. An amendment to Oklahoma's liquor laws passed in 2003 making it possible to open a brewery to brew strong beer.
My source says initially it will be mostly kegged beer marketed to bars and distributors.
Gotta say, just the regulations and convoluted laws in Oklahoma alone have probably kept many people from doing this moreso than money.

ahhh, just like the boulevard boys did...
Good deal. Since I "discovered" Choc a couple years back that has become my beer of choice. It is not only a good beer, but its fun to drink local. I drag a 6er with me whenever I head out of state and it is always well recieved.
Choc is 4.4 according to my little hydrometer thingy. Its just an estimation since I do not have the pre fermentation measurement, but it seems like a higher point product.
I hope they brew a dark beer and call it "Tulsa Crude" or some such thing. Its fun to have themes. Wait, no. I claim Trademark on the name "Tulsa Crude" and "Oklahoma Crude" as used for naming of a dark beer. It will be sold in cans that resemble oil drums.
In other news, I have a excellent name for a dark beer if anyone wants to buy it. I brew my own beer, but my 4 tap keg fridge crapped out on me... anyone have a freezer chest for sale?
I want to get back into home-brewing. I made a couple of batches back around '98 or so with a kit I got from Mecca.
If you find me an old freezer unit for $100 or so, you can come over and brew 5 gallons at a time. I have 3 fermentation tanks/buckets, 4 taps, 3 fillable kegs, bottles, capper and about everything you may need. I even have a notebook of what has worked well and what has not.
Until I have that unit back up and running, its too much of a pain to bottle the beer and carbonate it the old fashion way. I force carbonate to get clearer beer faster. Plus no exploding bottles. I want my beer and I want it, now.
Here you go! Looks like they are just about ready to begin brewing...all the equipment is here and being assembled.
Marshall Brewing - Tulsa (//%22http://www.myspace.com/marshallbrewing%22)

Marshall Brewing Company is Tulsa Oklahoma's 1st Production Craft Microbrewery. Production will begin in early fall 2007. Marshall Brewing Company is headed by Brewmaster Eric Marshall. Eric is a fourth generation Tulsan, with a degree in International Business and German language from the University of Tulsa. Eric left Tulsa in 2004 to study the art of craft brewing in Munich, Germany where he was awarded the prestigious International Diploma in Brewing Technology from the World Brewing Academy. He apprenticed in multiple craft breweries throughout Germany and served as a brewer at the Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. In December 2006 Eric decided to bring his talent back to Tulsa and begin working on getting Marshall Brewing Company off the ground. Marshall Brewing Company's goal is to bring the art, quality, and enjoyment of craft brewing to Oklahoma. Marshall Brewing Company will focus on the production of quality craft brewed Ales & Lagers. Please check back frequently for more information.
Mmmmmmm ... beeeeeeeeer.

We got the first piece of the equipment we were waiting on for our end of this project yesterday, still waiting on a couple more pieces which should be here next week. I think Eric's still hoping to get brewing by the end of Oct. but that might be pushing it- depends on how fast all the contracters can work. I'm anxious to see it up and running. He's been a great guy to work with.
I hope they set up a little tasting room, or even better yet, a small hole in the wall bar that serves nothing but their beer. Not some preppy Brick Town Brewery thing, just all about the beer.
Lunch?
(Maybe we'd better have a designated driver.)

With comfortable chairs or better yet, couches that make up different seating areas. It would be simply awesome.
Forget BOK, River development, east end, etc...--THIS is the best development news for Tulsa. Seriously. No city can claim to have made it unless they have at least one locally produced beer.
Marshall? 4th Generation?
Is this Marshall as in pies?

No.
"Marshall Brewing Co. selects Cubic as AOR
"He was a wise man who invented beer." – Plato
Cubic is pleased to announce that they have been selected as the Agency of Record for Marshall Brewing Company. The upstart brewer is bringing real world experience and a passion for fine crafted specialty beers to Tulsa and the surrounding region. Unlike local brew pubs in the region, the Marshall Brewing Co. will function as a standalone brewing facility not a combination brew pub and restaurant. Marshall gets its name from the founding family and the operation will be helmed by professional brewmeister, Eric Marshall.
Eric got his first taste of quality beer, quite literally, when he began home brewing here in Tulsa. Eric quickly developed a passion for not only the taste and quality of fine crafted beers, but for the entire process. Eric knew he wanted to train with the best and he did just that as part of a special brewing program in Germany. It was during this time that Eric began to fully appreciate the intricate art of the brewmeister. He was hooked. Eric returned several years later and continued to refine his brewing skills and business sense with several stateside operations. Eventually, Eric decided the time was right and we are pleased to announce that Tulsa will soon have a fine crafted line of beers they will be proud to call their very own."
the myspace page that ol pfox posted has some great pics
He used to be at victory brewing co (//%22http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_Brewing_Company%22) in Pennsylvania ... Did a german brewing apprenticeship in 05...

AMEN!
I just wish someone in this town would import Arrogant Bastard Ale.
Does anyone know what the law allows for microbreweries in Oklahoma? Can they allow tastings? Can they bottle & sell at liquor stores as well as restaurants (I have heard they can't)? Even more than allowing the sale of wine & beer in grocery stores, I would like to see our alcohol laws relaxed so that small breweries & brew pubs have a better chance of survival. I believe every other state has recognized the commericial viability of locally brewed beers--even Utah (anyone tried Polygamy Porter?? "Why just have one!")
pmcalk, everyone knows that Jesus hates beer and other alcohol. Its evil. Sale of it on Sundays is evil. Its consumption in public is evil. Getting too drunk and deciding to walk home instead of driving is evil. Real beer is evil. Selling rum and coke in same transaction is evil. Alcohol at a grocery store, you better believe thats evil. By extension, places that make beer must be evil - especially on Sunday.
Jesus said so.

Actually I don't think Jeebus said so. I believe it was pastors and priests who were worried their potential tithes were being spent on alcohol.
got some the other night... a great IPA, well not true- actually it was an outfreakingstanding IPA...
very nice guys... and they are going all in... they know beer and they've got the business model pretty well nailed down... look for co-branded beer at elliot's joints by the first of the year... but kilkennys will have marshall beer as well... then they'll start bottling growlers... and small bottles in the spring... way too cool...
looks like we'll be drinking our local brews by this spring... besides my own personal consumption, for events/gatherings we typically order 8-10 kegs a year and i can't wait for all of those to be local brews...
the best damn thing to happen around here in a long, long time...
You personally buy 8 to 10 kegs a year?
Does everybody wears tin foil hats at your parties?
I would wear one for a good local brew...
This is great news...
I need to get invites to Bruno's parties.
And yes, great news. I was hopeful they would be able to hock their wares at Oktoberfest, but alas... anyone know if Choctoberfest will be sold this year? OKBTOBERFEST! Wohoo!
Beer in Tulsa. Yay!

I had a Choctoberfest this weekend.
Guess I wasnt clear, I was wondering if they will be selling it at Oktoberfest.
Choc is yummy. I have adopted it as my home town beer, until it is offset by a better more home town beer.
Last I talked to him, no they won't be selling at Oktoberfest. They still don't have all the equipment in place.
With a username like mine I feel an obligation to ask if anyone has an update on this micro-brewery and when its beer is going to be available.
It's getting very, very close. Hopefully brewing will start w/in a couple of weeks. I think all we are waiting on for our contribution to the project is water and a final inspection by the city and state. Looked like the electricians and plumbers were close to finished when I was in there two weeks ago.
Eric has had a lot of un-expected issues which have come up w/ the building and city codes. Fortunately he's had the money to cover it.

Please, God... let him find a way to brew better than 3.2 beer. Please please PLEEAAAAAASSSEEEEE. I will buy tanker trucks full of local microbrew if it isn't 3.2.
I used to buy Huebert's from Brown's liquor in Stillwater. It was sour as heck and kinda weird, but it really grows on you somehow. I wish you could buy it in Tulsa somewhere and I wish this brewery much luck!
Conan, the beer will not be required to be 3.2, correct? I think it was discussed earlier in the post, but that is because the brewery will not also be a food venue, correct? So we will be able to buy the beer in local liquor stores. Will we also be able to buy it at the brewery itself? Drink it at the brewery? Thanks, I think some of this has already been answered throughout this thread, but it would be nice to have it all in one place.

I would buy beer from this brewery for lunch, dinner, breakfast, dessert, next week, next month, 10 years from now... AGH!!! Need a local brewery!

BG- I'm going to take a spin by there this afternoon to check on a couple of things. Eric and I have talked about this in the past, let's just say I've drank some strong beer in the interim and don't remember all the details on alcohol content and distribution. I can tell you for certain that Marshall will be available on tap at bars around town. He's got bottling lines and keg lines.
Oklahoma's laws are pretty convoluted on all this, at least in my opinion.

Considered driving by there just to scope it out today... that's right, I'm a beer stalker. [8)]
I went by the brewery this morning. Eric was not there yet, but I did talk to him by phone. He's wanting to start brewing within two weeks, but there's still a pretty good amount of work to finish up. My guess is still three to four weeks away.
As far as distribution, I don't know if he's got it nailed down more specifically. For certain, McNellie's will be selling his beer and other bars. If I get back down there this afternoon, I'll see if he's got more commitments on distribution.
Thanks Conan. I am specifically interested in knowing (i) whether I will be able to purchase this beer at liquor stores (ii) whether the beer will be required to be 3.2% abv or less and (iii) whether the brewery location itself will be a bar serving its own beer.

I can tell you for certain there will be no bar at the brewery. Sales from the brewery will be strictly wholesale to licensed distributors, unless anything has changed since I last talked to Eric about that specifically. IOW, you or I can't just walk up to the back door and ask to buy a case of IPA.
Oklahoma's alcohol distribution laws are so screwed up, we are fortunate that he was willing to even build this in the state, IMO.
