I am going to have a baby in January. I am kinda new to the Tulsa area. I was wondering if some of you could recommend a Tulsa Hospital to deliver my baby at? Does anyone know anything about Southcrest? Is it a good hospital? I would appreciate the help.
Only go to Southcrest if you want their complimentary tail, horns, and lizard skin. It's free with every baby they deliver.
Ok fine, Saint Francis gets a thumbs up.
My uncle is an OBGYN at St. Francis, so Im biased. [;)]
I and all four of my siblings were born at St. John, and about five of my nine nieces and nephews were born there, as well (the most recent being a month ago) and nobody in my family has had any trouble with the hospital. They've always done a great job for us!
A niece and nephew were born at St. Francis and it was pretty good, as was Hillcrest for another, but I'd avoid TRMC (now the OSU Hospital in downtown).
Both my children were born at Southcrest. The equipment is new and the staff is paid quite a bit higher than the others. Almost everyone I knew who was good at St Francis or St Johns has now moved to Southcrest because they pay better. The labor and delivery rooms are huge, wood floors, the whole nine yards.
Keep in mind that all hospitals offer tours to expectant mothers so you can make your own choices.
I would say St Francis just for the fact they have The Eastern Oklahoma Perinatal Center (EOPC)on site. Just in case something serious happens (heaven forbid).
This is the neonatal intensive care unit of The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis. It is a specialty referral hospital that serves infants from all across Oklahoma and neighboring states.

Did you take the horns and tail? Or pay the extra $3.50 for the lobster claws?
Southcrest. I have dealt with other hospitals in the area and so far Southcrest has been the best. However, my opinion is not based on the baby handling abilities, as I have never been in any of these hospitals for babies. But if I were having a baby (figuratively speaking since I am a guy) I would go to Southcrest. And let just pray that I don't ever have to worry about where to go for a baby...ever!

Neither, but I did enjoy the fact that sirloin steak and orange roughy are just some of the options the patients have to eat for free from the room service menu.
Between both children I spent over a month almost living at the hospital and I still have a favorable review of the place. That kinda says something.

In my opinion St. Francis is the best in the area. Their EOPC is incredible. My twins boys were born at St. Francis. Luckily, they didn't have to go to the EPOC but it was nice knowing it was onsite.

Keep in mind every hospital has similar facilities. St Francis is just larger and takes in the indigent patients. St John's has the newest and highest tech NICU/Special Care Nursery and Both my children were in the one at Southcrest.
St. John, St. Francis, and Southcrest are all going to be about the same. I hope I never have to set foot in Hillcrest or OSU/TRMC or whatever it's called these days.
Both my daughters were born at St. John's. I didn't have any complaints about SJMC. A friend of ours had a premie (six wks early) the same week my second child was born also at SJMC and they were very pleased with the care.
If your insurance is so flexible they will let you choose and you aren't anticipating complcations, sounds like Soutcrest will have the newest facilities.
I never understood, why is SouthCrest such a good hospital and Hillcrest so commonly referred to as a place you wouldnt send your worst enemy to? They are both owned by the same entity, correct?
Or would that be incorrect?
Find a good OBGYN - A baby can be born anywhere. What you need is a good doctor.
I would recommend Eddie Abbott - one of the best.

It is my understanding that Southcrest was Hillcrest just serving South Tulsa. But since have split away from Hillcrest and Hillcrest was bought out a couple of years ago. At least I think.
I was born at St Johns and I think they did a pretty good job. [8D] I don't live too far from there now. Hope to move closer to there some day. Will probably die there too. Dang... I need to get out more or something lol. At least its right smack dab in the middle of some of the most beautiful, pleasant, places in this part of the country, IMHO.
I was born by Cesarean section... But not so you'd notice. It's just that when I leave a house, I go out through the window.

Incorrect thats incorrect? Or correct thats incorrect? [:P]
SouthCrest was originally supposed to half owned by Hillcrest and the other was (I think) was Doctor's Hospital. Both ran into financial trouble and Southcrest is now part of the group that owns mainly smaller hospitals like claremore regional.
So Southcrest is a totally different entity now? That would make a little more sense in why people call Hillcrest "Killcrest" and call Southcrest "a good hospital" :D
Southcrest killed a couple of kids not to long ago....By giving them an overdose of pain meds/morphine......
I was born at Tulsa Osteopathic, which became Tulsa Regional, which is now OSU-Medical.
I went into OSU-Medical a few months ago when I took a friend there for an apendectomy(sp?). hile it isn't necessarily the newest, shiniest hospital in the world, the nurses/doctors there were definately some of the friendliest and cutest that I've seen in a long time. [:P]
St. John has a brand new labor and delivery area that just opened a month or two ago. They also have a new, within the last year, NICU.
I wouldn't say that all the best doctors left the other Tulsa hospitals for Southcrest. Just the most greedy ones.
St. John and St. Francis are on one tier.
Southcrest and Hillcrest are on the next tier down.
Oklahoma Osteopathic/Tulsa Regional/OSU Medical or whatever the hell it is called now traditionally has a bad reputation but since I've never known anyone who was in the hospital there for any reason I can't really say how good or bad they are.

TRMC/OSU Medical was in much need of help. I interviewed for a job there once and was rather mortified by some of their operations (keep in mind I'm a computer guy and can't talk about their medical practices)
OSU will make things better in the long run, but it will take awhile. If OSU had been allowed to buy the hospital outright, that probably would've sped things up.
hillcrest is now owned by ardent... the helmrich women's center there is brand new and impressive... ardent has done a lot with the hospital but has not yet shaken the public perception that it is a "poor hospital"... they will...
southcrest is still relatively new and the l/d suites are nice... yes, they had anesthesiologist/crna's kill two kids in three weeks, they both died post-op... southcrest recruited many physician's in with unsustainable financial packages... some will start to come up next spring, we'll see what happens then...
st. francis has the only level 3c nicu in town... if you have a bad baby, it is the only place to be... the last thing you want to be doing is transporting but if you choose to deliver elsewhere, it is your only option...
st. john's nicu is brand new and nice, but other than the private stalls for each premie it has no great tech that st. francis lacks...
trmc is currently owned by ardent... and they'd love to dump it... it is an out-dated, poorly staffed ****hole... they never wanted it but it came with the package... they were hoping against hope that the state would simply by the thing in toto for OSU but that did not happen...
most of them are very good hospitals and have some nice facilities... over the past year, southcrest is now doing nearly as many deliveries as st. francis... the hillcrest numbers have increased some and st. johns' is down dramatically...
if you have a full term uncomplicated pregnancy, go where your doctor says or wherever you want... if you are high risk, i'd stick to st. francis or st. johns...
Does your insurance company not dictate what hospital you will use? Many do.
I want a doctor to bring his/her "A" game, not one who is "practicing".
What's the skinny on the two kids that died after surgery?
I and some friends have had deliveries at St. Johns recently and all come away with very pleasant experiences. Nurses and Docs during all phases were nice, informative, and very patient. I would certainly recommend them however I have nothing to compare them to in this City. Better experience here than I had in two other similarly sized cities and hospitals.
Additionally, it was nice being right across from Utica Sq. Visiting family were able to walk across and buy us very nice gifts.

Slightly off topic...But see, why no hotel right there by the hospitals and museums, utica square, near Brookside and Cherry Street, very close to downtown, etc.
Great big hunk of open property right there by the corner. Any developers out there?
Keep in mind if you plan on having a tubal ligation after the childbirth that St John's is a Catholic hospital and won't perform the operation as it is a form of birth control.

Many hospitals dictate which hospitals you will use by deciding which insurance they will accept. its a strange relationship to be sure, but insurance companies rarely refuse to do business with a health care provider. Usually the provider does not want to operate under the terms and refuses the insurance.
Why does Hillcrest have a bad perception? Was there a big malpractice suit there or something?

it used to be non-profit and served a disproportionate number of indigent patients and medicare/medicaid... but that has charged dramatically since it became a for profit entity....

I swent through the past two years of TulsaWorld.com as well as google and didn't find either one of them.
As of now I'll file it away with "Target doesn't sell american flags because they're owned by foreigners," and other rumors.

No need for a developer for that chunk of land, H&P owns it. They will build something.

Yes I know. My dream development for that spot. H&P headquarters, or they can stay downtown, but with shops on the first floor, middle floors H&P headquarters or other businesses. Top floors a nice hotel with a ground floor lobby and a rooftop, garden, restaurant looking out over swan lake and a stunning view of downtown. Something like this...

If only I had the money lol. Come on H&P you can do it.[:D]
