Super Nice entrance to the racetrack then. Someone says a fire claimed the statium and front facade. Tragedy, did that building and the Coliseum not have fire insurance coverage back then.

Photo caption says Oil Exposition 1926 for this photo. Not sure if it was that early but well before the upper photo taking in 1945 I would think.
Obviously turn one of the big Auto racetrack can be seen, and there are little if any homes in the area. Yale does not even seem to be paved heading south past 21st Street.
Gota love some people saying that Auto Racing came to the Fairgrounds after the houses were in that area. Believe they got that confused with when the 5/8 mile track was constructed.
That's pretty cool. So there were several buildings on the site of the IPE back in the day. Looks like the ball park was moved closer to 15th & yale eventually (did they do that when they replaced Oiler's stadium?) and, pretty obvious that the race track was moved north and east when they built the new track that opened in 1974.
What year(s) were the Pavillion and armory built?
Is it just my imagination, or was there a miniature golf course where Big Splash is now back in the '70's?

Great pictures AMP. The original fairgrounds grandstand and track that you can see in your pictures was destroyed, when the bulk of it fell into sinking underground coal mines! It was a wonderful art-deco facade, and was lost to the caving mines back in the 1950s I think. I am not sure of the exact dates of its demise. It was a very nice facility for its time, with exhibit space, cafeteria, and dormitory space built into the areas below the grandstand. It had a great art-deco limestone facade, sort of a Mayan temple type theme.
The entire fairgrounds property and east past 21st & Sheridan and south to around 31st street is riddled with old abandoned coal mines and abandoned oil and gas wells, especially the area northwest of 21st & Sheridan. I am surprised the homes there have not had more problems over the years due to mine cave-ins.
