Title: Need Pie
Post by: sgrizzle on June 20, 2007, 08:44:05 AM
I need some place where I can order whole pies of the following kind and they'll be good (not wal-mart)

-Apple
-Pecan
-Cherry

I looked at Impressions but I don't think they carry any of those.

My office mate buys whole pies at the Village Inn at 31st & Memorial. They're pretty good.

Marie Cavenders -- Tippins still around? There are also some smaller caterers who will make a pie in your pie plate so it looks like you actually made it.

Cavenders is Western Wear.
Tippins is closed.

I'm trying to avoid national chains since likely you're just getting frozen or partially premade pies.

Try Merritts.  There's one at 15th & Harvard and another (I think) at 71st & Garnett.

Didn't Bama get out of the pie business alltogether?

I think about all they do now is biscuits and frid pies for McDonalds and pizza crust for Pizza Hut.

I miss their little pecan pies. [:(]

I don't see what wrong with Wal-Mart pies- We at the Sauerkraut househould use Wal-Mart pies and foods all the time. Tulsa does seem to have a poor pick of food stores they just have Albertsons and Warehouse Food and Aldi and that's about it. Where I live we have Meijers, Krogers, Aldi, Giant Eagle, Save-a-lot on top of Wal-Mart foods. We also have alot of bakeries. The only thing we don't have that Tulsa does is Whataburger joints.

Actually, Mr. Stream-of-consciousness, we have a few more than just Warehouse, Albertson's and Aldi.

There's Reasor's, Petty's, Perry's, Super Target, Wild Oats...doesn't seem like a "poor pick of food stores" to me.

sgrizzle -- seriously, call Lambrusco'z. They'll fix you up. If you've never been there, you're in for a treat. And get some white queso to take to a party sometime. Everyone will love you for it.

It's a shame that I'm no longer in the area. As handy as I am in the kitchen, I can bake a mean pie, and I'd keep everyone here supplied with all kinds of great pies and baked goods.

For pick up or delivery?

I know a place in Michigan that makes pies that are sooooo good you'll want to slap your mama.

For some incredible pies, take the 30 minute drive down to Okmulgee to Colemans.  Those are some good pies.  The cream pies are the best, the fruit pies delicious, the pecan pie to swoon for.  And while your there, get a burger for the drive home.

Any word whether/when they will reopen?

Petty's, Lambruscoz, & Merrits are good bets; also, the farmer's markets often have a good selection of baked goods.

Used to be a Taylor Pie Company near 6th and Utica that hade the best Cream Pies, Fruit Pies.  Long lines of folks at holiday time picking up orders.  That company provided pies for several restaurants in Tulsa.

Luby's has a decent pie selection.  I am sure there are much better.  Try Queenies in Utica Square, she always had some great pies it seems.  Or Rowan and Petty in Utica Square, or are they just Petty's today. I remember when they delivered from the 36th and Peoria location.  Believe Scott, the younger brother runs that business now.

They should have the hook up.  However on the Walmart line, Sam's Wholesale Club seems to have a very nice bakery in their clubs and they do make some awesome muffins as I recall.

Tulsa does have a diverse selection of food sources.

Well for those who supported Lambruscoz, pat on the bat. It was a hit. The pies were rated as follows:
1st place - Apple
2nd place - Pecan
3rd place - Cherry

Please no one lambast me for my statements, for they are strictly my own personal opinion, but here goes:

Of course, nothing can beat a homemade pie, made from fresh, quality ingredients and baked by a competent baker, but for my money, I see absolutely nothing wrong with Mrs. Smiths frozen pies.  I buy them quite often.  Local grocers often have them on sale and the coupon section in the Sunday World often has $1 off coupons for Mrs. Smiths pies.  $2.00-$2.50 for a large, hot, fresh out of the oven fruit pie is a pretty good deal these days.  I buy them when I see store specials and I also have a coupon.  I find local grocery/bakery pies somewhat lacking, however good their intentions are.

The Mrs. Smiths pie company is now owned by the Schwanns food service company.  You see those Schwanns home delivery trucks around town.  For my money, they make a pretty darn good pie, and baking it youself and having it fresh out of the oven is the best.

No, I walked in and a lady asked if she could help. I told her I had ordered pie and she told me to go stand by the register. I didn't really see the store.

Of course, you can always slip a frozen Mrs. Smiths pie out of its packaged tin and into your own glass or metal pie plate.  This is much easier to do while the pie is still frozen, prior to baking, and I would recommend a light shade aluminum pie pan, lightly Crisco greased.  Of course, I have never done this myself, just hearsay. (Wink)

I think some may be turned off to frozen baked items because they have had poor results due to a faulty oven.  Get an oven thermometer and check to see how accurately your oven is calibrated.  You may be surprised how off it is.

I don't know about that, but I do know the pies at Coleman's are  the best.  I was down there last week.  Great fillings, nice flakey crusts, and meringue all day long one the cream pies.

Mrs. Smiths pies are or were made in Stilwell, Oklahoma. Home of the "Stilwell Tops" back in the day.  No wonder they are sooo good, close to the munchies factory.

Got this:

I regret to inform you that we have lost one of our favorite restaurants to the economy and road construction.  As of Sunday, June 12th at 5:00 p.m., Marie Callenders was forced to shut its doors.  Marie Callenders has been a part of our delivery network for the past 9 years and we will all miss their great comfort food and delicious pies.  (Looks like some of us will have to start cooking Thanksgiving dinners again)

742dine still has a large variety of restaurants to offer so don't let this stop you from calling us for delivery.  But this notice hopes to ward off frustration by letting you know in advance that Marie Callender's is no longer operating in Tulsa.
